Pros
  • Slightly less political and more work life balance than international consultancies (something less than 2 pounds of flesh) (in 6 reviews)

    They do offer a good service to companies

    Commissions only and basically generate your own leads

    Advice to Management

    Need to work on that telemarketing room and educating them on how to set REAL appointments.

    Pros

    Good exposure to banking and major telcos in Australia

    Cons

    The main reason for joining SMS was to avoid risk of being an independent contractor, however given the shift in the market and new policies anyone who is on the bench will quickly be fired ‘Strategy’: A lot of chat about how it is a strategy firm not a bodyshop, but not a reality for a 95% of consultants. Clients perception is as a more expensive way of recruiting contractors, not a go to for fixed price pieces of work, and as such are squeezing rates. Account managers are so desperate for sales that they will lower prices / offer consultants for free for a number of weeks. Pay: Don’t expect payrises to keep up with CPI, and bonuses, if they are offered, are a joke HR: Consistent lack of communication / understanding between management and HR policies (extended leave etc). This lead to major issues for me and resulted in threats to bring the company to the ombudsman to get appropriate notice paid. Training and development: Some in-house training is available, however quality is questionable, will also make you come in on a Saturday, or refuse to allow you to attend if you are on an engagement.

    Advice to Management

    Recognise what you are good at - body shopping - and stand by that. Eliminate the flat structure if you have not already done so, its a nonsense with range of experience from grad to program directors.

    Pros

    Reasonably collegiate environment. Some salary packaging. Slightly less political and more work life balance than international consultancies (something less than 2 pounds of flesh)..

    Cons

    Somewhat cliquish. Clients do not consider the company to be a legitimate consulting company (i.e. resource augmentation) and lack economies of size/scale and therefore difficult to obtain high-level outcome-based engagements for large enterprises. Limited or no tangible knowledge management processes, system or culture. BYOD laptop.Varying personnel standards. Culture of mediocrity in parts.

    Advice to Management

    Clarity on market positioning and willingness to invest in bona fide intellectual property and associated cultural initiatives.

    Pros

    -The consulting staff are fantastic. Really a great bunch of people to work with. -work-life balance is great. Well above the average than for most consulting companies. -Plenty of opportunities to add to your skills and learn- but this will be on your own time and effort. Company will ABSOLUTELY NOT reserve you for professional growth at the expense of you billing. -generally less kissing up to sales managers required to get ahead than other consulting companies.

    Cons

    -Managers are skilled, but almost solely focussed on sales. -Wide variance in regards to career development between offices -Salaries/compensation is at the very low end of market. -Sole focus on sales. -Little professional development, although they are getting better at this. -No mentorship/guidance to staff. -Difficult to make vertical moves. However, lateral moves are generally easier than competitors. -Success will depend on positioning yourself appropriately within the company

    Advice to Management

    Focus less on sales and more on your people.

    Pros

    Variety of Tier One clients, Diversity of projects and engagements through various industries, Skillsets of Consultants, Resource sharing

    Cons

    Bodyshopping style of Consulting, Repetitive clients, Taking on new Graduates to cut costs, Being designated to random projects, Size of the Bench, Budget cuts overall (and for Christmas parties), Failure with international hubs, Always sending people out to clients in the sticks. A Tier Two Consulting firm at best, overall.

    Advice to Management

    Get to know your Consultants better, rather than having them know you. Give the new Consultants a chance to get out there and deliver. Hire for the right season, and not promise projects you cannot win or deliver.

    Pros

    - Working at SMS can be a good stepping stone to a better career with another employer - The remaining senior consultants can offer a wealth of experience and guidance

    Cons

    As seen in other reviews, a number of recurring problems: - More and more is expected of consultants above and beyond consulting engagements in an attempt to plug gaps in processes and IP - Most consultants are pushed out to site and then left there either to sink or swim with minimal support - Culture does not tolerate people speaking out against the company - Focused on shareholder wealth at the detriment of consultants - Office based appointments largely based on nepotism or old boys / girls club - Does not know how to sell experienced / senior consultants. Expects these consultants to find their own work - Collaborative culture is deteriorating as consultants are becoming more disgruntled - You have no choice over the project you're working on. It's all about utilisation. - The number of underhanded dismissals and bulling of consultants to resign with low utilization or out of favour with management is on the increase - Fixed price projects have all but disappeared. Almost all roles are "resource augmentation" being a body on a seat. Bodyshopping is rife - Dealing with office staff is an exercise in futility, being completely unhelpful and causing frustration - Consultant retention is very poor. Average tenure is around 2 years

    Advice to Management

    The current bodyshopping strategy and hiring experienced consultants over retaining existing ones will only work for so long. Once the company grows a new strategy is required. Grow some perspective and realise that the grass is not greener at SMS and real cultural changes are required, otherwise the company won't grow any further, and even more consultants will leave in drones once the market picks up again.

    Not too many...Melbourne centric work is based on what they win there and then fed to other states.Ok if you're in the Melbourne office.

    Pros

    Abillity to attract terrific talent; most employees are experienced ,some even with Post Grad. qualifications.

    Cons

    This organisation has outgrown its culture. Just another pretentious body-shop that has old-school management policy; this company will not always support the hard-working consultant at difficult times - pay is not commensurate to an employee's market-rate even though the company will claim the opposite. This is one reason why it cannot retain the talent it attracts. Its business model is very rigid and profit-centric (i.e. all about the shareholder's interests not the employee's); Training attendance is encourage though should never occur on Saturdays or after hours till late. Consultants are too afraid to speak up in fear of retribution.

    Advice to Management

    This organisation has much room for improving its organisational management structure; there are some who are not so competent to take on these positions,and impose their authority inappropriately. Public awareness of these matters has spread like wildfire.
