I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Global EPCM firm affords potential for greater career opportunities across a variety of business sectors.

    Cons

Engineering management staff need to develop better people skills. Local engineering offices need to be more effectively integrated into enterprise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue the process of eliminating information silos within the enterprise. Engage engineering management in developing people skills.

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin

    Pros

The upside to working for SNC-Lavalin is the opportunity to work on huge projects that involve many disciplines. Having a role on such projects can be very rewarding.

    Cons

Even after a few years in the firm it is difficult to obtain the right training and coaching to continue and grow in more important roles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have better training programs for developing project management skills within the junior team. Not just hire from outside sources.

  3.

Good pay, good benefits-but poor management and no corporate direction

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay is competitive, benefits are better than average for E&C, and the discipline workers in the Oil & Gas division are mostly dedicated and well-qualified. As with all E&C's, when there's work, the office has a laid-back feel, when that changes-its tense. Work life balance mostly OK. Office has nice amenities. IT department is better than average for an E&C.

    Cons

Work flow is erratic, Business development is unfocused and hit-and miss. Some senior managers do not get along with each other and that negative relationship affects the smooth-running of the office. SNC-Lavalin Canada cannot decide if it wants to play with the "big dogs"-Fluor's and the Bechtel's, or just try to get the scraps of smaller projects from below average-to-average Houston clients. Once that is decided-the office should improve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the grass roots, sit with the people who really do the work-don't just meet with peers-they will just tell you how wonderful you are. Treat all employees like people and try hard to get along with everyone, not just your "favorites". You have great potential-stop petty squabbling and focus on building up the business!

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay is great for the area

    Cons

Weak leadership, chaotic environment, little room for promotion or growth, job stability is constantly in question, slow growth in t&d which limits longevity, constantly under fire for missing unattainable goals sold by upper management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your company has great sales and marketing personnel which lands great opportunities but the lack of ability to meet commitments will eventually alienate industry members. Try mobilizing an oversized elite group to get off the ground on long term contracts. Please focus on contract requirements and documentation to give your team a chance to be successful in the eyes of the client.

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    1. Most of the people at this location are relatively nice and pleasant.
    2. The benefits and health insurance are competitive and pretty good.

    Cons

    1. Management does not stick up for employees. Employees are sacrificed and taken advantage of to appease the client. Management does not stand up to the client when it needs to.
    2. Corporate interference has tarnished our client relationship.
    3. Work culture glorifies having zero work-life balance. You are made to feel you are not a team player if you don't jump at the chance to work overtime.
    4. Most projects are last minute emergencies due to poor planning.
    5. Resistant to change.
    6. Noncompetitive salary. The excuse of "steadiness of work" as a reason for lower salaries does not hold up when the company lays off large amounts of people every few years.
    7. High employee turnover. Many long term (15-20+ years) employees have been run off due to disagreements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick up for your employees and encourage work-life balance. Have the spine to make tough decisions for the good of your employees.

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

SNC-Lavalin cares about it's employees. It's a team players dream job. They care about your personal life as well as your professional life and help to strike a comparable balance between them.

    Cons

The performance evaluation process is not the best. Although I was given a very good one, I was not given one the following year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management really needs to listen to their people on the front lines on up. We may not have as much experience in management, but we do have common sense.
