I worked at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very autonomous working environment, tasks are provided and are expected to meet them. Some of the travel can be arduous

    Cons

There can be nepotism, and if you are a former enlisted member without a degree, you should pursue an engineering degree if you seek promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture at SPAWAR is good, the only thing I would recommend is to try to prevent nepotism, and try to build an avenue for promotion for individuals who are hard workers and provide real value instead of the ones that provide political value.

    Pros

    - cool and challenging work
    - decent benefits
    - dedicated to their customer
    - lots of growth opportunity at entry and mid level

    Cons

    - senior levels are hard to promote through (not a lot of mobility)
    - eventually salary caps catch up with you mid career
    - gov. in general pays small bonuses.
    - higher level customers tend to be more interested in their agenda rather than what is achievable

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Sick leave, teleworking, health insurance, life insurance, matching contributions, overall a very good work-life balance... but these benefits can be had at any federal agency.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and procedures that are often not followed. First line supervisors are not interested in employees, I have yet to see or meet in person my new first-line supervisor even if he's been my first line supervisor for almost six months.
It can sometimes be a very politicizes work-environment and border-line discriminatory if you don't hold the same religious and political views of your co-workers.

SPAWAR offers a flexible work schedule. You get to choose your own hours for the most part. Pay and benefits are competitive.

    Cons

Government uncertainty can be stressful. Working for the government involes a lot of red tape that can be frustrating. Work load is reasonable.

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay for the Charleston area.

    Cons

The pay is the only positive aspect of working here. The DoD employees who have tenure are absolutely worthless and have little to no real-world experience or valuable skills. Typical government environment, filled with red tape, bureaucracy, and laziness. Contractors are treated like dogs, and the govt "masters" are barely functioning special-needs cases who literally have zero ability to think or act for themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less government, more contractors. It's the only way any real work will ever get accomplished.

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Job security once probation completed, work stability over private/commercial contractors, adequate salary, some ability to progress and grow

    Cons

Little recognition or even acknowledgment of outstanding performers, few training opportunities, Navy mindset (heavy on tradition regardless of value) even among civilians

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resist temptation to inflate performance ratings and practice favoritism

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great pay, great time off

    Cons

No innovation in company. Creativity is discouraged, and training is useless

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find some interesting work for new employees, and don't contract work out. Let employees do some work, and don't let engineers turn into managers in their 20's.

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Safe and stable position with decisions by committee. It's a good place to retire.

    Cons

People gravitate to these positions for security. The work is hard for a few and easy for most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house more often. You tend to lose good one's who can't seem to get past the issues.

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center

    Pros

Compensation is good regarding benefits, and they do allow some flex time as long as you complete 8hours/day. They employ a number of veterans- most after they do their 20 years and allows them to coast through the remainder of working years with little effort if so desired.

    Cons

The beaurocracy is suffocating here. Attempts to advance or challenge oneself are largely ignored. As much as mission/vision are preached, I have yet to feel any contribution despite all efforts to do my job well. Overall, this place is not challenging and makes me feel like a number in a large maze of cubicles. I am getting out of here as soon as possible. I feel like I'm wasting taxpayer money being here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How do you change such an ingrained culture when no one wants to do so? I think that taxpayer money needs to be the focus of all operations because that is what pays the salaries here.
