    Pros

Being the Navy's research and development lab, there is a ton of innovation and really cool stuff being designed here.
Gov't employees have a ton of benefits and education opportunities.

    Cons

"Old Guard" rules the roost, meaning that there is a large population of baby boomers with a stubborn mindset that doesn't foster new ideas or accept change without a battle.

    Pros

    -Broad exposure to general engineering
-Year round opportunities, I interned here through most of school.
-Often find yourself doing real work (not just busy work, but there will be busy work.)
-The more work you seek, the more you are given (giving you more experience.)
-Great place for prior military, you definitely feel amongst your own (even though most are navy there.)

    Cons

-Often will be given the tasks (such as paper work) that others don't want to do (your the low man on the pole, so this is to be expected anywhere.)
-Will have days without work, but will have to "look" busy. Else people will ask your supervisor why he isn't giving you enough tasks, causing unnecessary problems. (This isn't a problem for just interns, but everyone there. It's the government.)
-Internships will not lead to a position, the hiring process requires you to apply like everyone else (once again, it's the government.)
-Pay is much less than average for Interns and Engineers

    Advice to Management

    Stay Frosty ;)

    Pros

There is a lot of liberty given to the researchers to create a new project. Also, there are a lot of people willing to help.

    Cons

Many of the people in the company can already retire, but they want to stay there longer. These people are not motivated to start new projects.

    Advice to Management

Management should focus more on hiring young, bright minds that are eager to create exciting projects. Many of the old people don't want to innovate.

    Pros

Great working atmosphere and location. Researchers seemed very competent, helpful, and working on interesting projects. Seemed like a place that offers many opportunities and flexibility for self-motivated researchers.

    Cons

Procurement of materials seemed a bit of a hassle and took longer than necessary.

    Pros

Your internship experience really depends on the quality of your mentor. Your mentor will pretty much determine how well your experience will be.

    Cons

It seems like half of the people here don't enjoy their job very much. Only about 60% of projects seem to be active.

    Pros

Good for high initiative engineers, scientists, technologists, managers. Unique opportunities are here for those who are willing to learn continually and work outside their comfort zone.
    Excellent work/life balance
Ethics are high. Organization has built trusted relationships with military.

    Cons

Complex bureaucracy. Old fashioned management culture at mid- to high- levels of the hierarchy. Too many policies, procedures, unwritten rules. This bogs down communication, technical work, innovation, new initiatives.
Purely technical contributors struggle to get recognition from management.

    Advice to Management

    Trust and empower all employees.
Commit to learning from new hires and other outsiders who can drive innovation.

    Pros

    Great benefits, and decent pay

    Cons

Employees who have been with the company for over 20 years or so, are the only ones that Management truly listens to. If you have only been with the company for a few years, your opinion will not be valued.

    Advice to Management

Listen to ALL of your employees, not just the ones who have been there the longest. Show everyone that their word matters and are valuable.
