I have been working at SPX Process Equipment

    Pros

The pay and benefits package are some of the best in the area. SPX puts out a good product and our people tend to care about the product that we represent.

    Cons

Communication needs to start from the top. People in the organization care about the products we create and represent. Years ago we would get quarterly newsletters letting us know how the company is doing. We have that in the electronic form ( the My SPX site ) but many employees do not have access to this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication is key and letting people know where our company is means alot to people. Recognition of positive achievements does more for morale than recognition of negative achievements.

I have been working at SPX Process Equipment

    Pros

Its a real laid back vibe. They don't want you to rush through everything. They just want you to go at your pace and be accurate in your work. Management is really chill and they treat you with respect.

    Cons

You hire on initially as a temp. So you have to learn quickly and be better than those around you so you don't get cut.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a little more training to the temps. Its affects the other workers when the new guys don't know what they're doing and we spend our time fixing their mistakes.

    Pros

It leaves you wondering how such a disorganized business stays profitable.

    Cons

If the company did not have a cash cow product line they would be eaten alive by competitors. Upper management is rotated on a yearly basis

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No alignment from upper managment, Delavan is a playground for GM's

I have been working at SPX Process Equipment

    Pros

Most employees and coworkers are very friendly and professional. They are highly knowledgeable of our products and services and experts in our field of work. The workplace is comfortable and enjoyable to work in. Management allows the employees to take on responsibility and do their jobs with minimal micromanagement. Vacation time, paid holidays, and 401k plan are all decent. Compensation is average or on par compared to other large F500 companies.

    Cons

Health insurance benefits were cut significantly so that the employee pays a much larger amount. Salary increases and bonuses have been pretty low the past few years in the poor economy even though the company reports that it is doing well. Upper Management can sometimes lose sight of what is going on in the trenches which is not unlike many large companies. They do not ask for feedback from the people doing the work. Many departments are staffed a bit thin resulting in medium to heavy work loads but it does allow the days to go by fast.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Request feedback from employees on how processes can be made better or what should be changed in the workplace or environment. Don't become too detached from what is going on at the basic levels of the company where the majority of important work is being done. Stabilize the environment for a few years before acquiring more small businesses. Begin hiring some more staff so that the over worked excellent employees do not continue to leave to other companies.

    Pros

If you live in town you don't have to fight the traffic, since it's further out of the city.
I would not want to commute everyday into Houston downtown.

    Cons

Pay is low for everything your required to do at your job. Required to work
weekends and late night without compensation. I suppose this is typical of
    most companies now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your sales staff needs to be more application oriented and listen to customers problems more.
If their is a problem out in the field, the sales staff needs to fix it, but at same time see if it can
be improved on. One of the best ways of getting new business is to ask what your customers
are having problems with and see if we can be of service. Going beyond just a service call.
