Pros
Flexible, People are friendly. Opportunties to grow
Cons
They manage business with short outlook that only extends to the next quarter. Poor benefits, health insurance is self funded and you pay based on your salary. Bonus is used in the calculation of health insurance premium whether you make the bonus or not but yet all other benefits the bonus is taken out of the calculation. For example on the company paid life insurance. Cheap and skimpy on the bennies.
Advice to Senior Management
Manage to the year not the quarter, provide better benefits
Pros
Good people to work with, many long time people (but see advice to management)
Cons
Stress is never ending
The "Street" rules - but this is a large corporation
Advice to Senior Management
Need more young people. The bench strength is limited
Pros
In terms of compensation, SPX pays well, and the benefits are good. The company does business in a number of diverse areas which helps balance out things during unstable times.
Cons
Management tends to be insular, close-minded and resort to old school ways of doing things. There's a strong old boys network at work. They are clueless when it comes to the importance of marketing, social media, diversity and other disciplines that are essential in working in a global market place. This doesn't bode well for a long-term future for the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Get out of the box. Bring in fresh blood -- particularly in the areas of investor relations and public relations.
Pros
Salaries, professionalism/competence of peers, variety of opportunities.
Cons
Benefits package below-average to average.
Pros
SPX really tries to be a good corporate citizen, provide value to its shareholders, and develop its employees if young.
Cons
Depending on the business unit and segment, it can be a bad experience. One needs to be young to progress.
Advice to Senior Management
What would Kearny think about senior managers spending half an hour on the size of the font?
Pros
Open source for all employees, respected by management layer. Many opportunities to acquire training on vihicle diagnostic protocols. Well relationship among coworkers.
Cons
Lower bonus on achievement for completion on projects. Need more sharing information from management layer. Need more opportunities for promotion.
Advice to Senior Management
Care employees much more and positively conduct employees to find the correct direction for development in workplace and much more inspire new employees.
Pros
Friendly Management
Friendly Coworkers
Not Too many Red Tapes
Growth Oriented
Cons
Lacking Talent Development
Salary not the best
Advice to Senior Management
Build Bench Strength for the future
Pros
Good corporate structure with great benefits.
Cons
Lax in monitoring performance of Division Executives
Pros
The compensation was agreeable.
They started embracing modern concepts (such as green technology) , and were actually starting to focus more on lean principles.
Because the segment I worked for was smaller, I was able to get more hands-on experience in different departments; and therefore learn more.
Cons
Many manual processes, and reluctance to embrace more modern, streamlined approaches.
Management more focused on fixing small fires than, agreeing, positioning the organization, and dedicating resources to fix the real problems: old processes, antiquated systems, manual data collection etc.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn what collective intelligence is. Study it, and employ it. Or you'll end up with a handful of idiots running your organization. Your most valuable resources come not just from leadership, but from the people who support leadership. They know quite a lot, and in my experience, the reluctance of senior leadership has caused costly mistakes.
Pros
The tasks and opportunites that I did receive were great. Generally the coworkers (and some of management) were very helpful and supportive. Safety was becoming a big consideration in decisions.
Cons
It was always a fight to expand my own abilities.
Accountablity was not usually a part of the work envirnoment nor was there a level playing field.
Advice to Senior Management
Pick a path and stick to it. Do not say you want something then do nothing to support it.
