I worked at SPX full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Career Opportunities, Great Co-Workers and culture. Decent Benefits. Fortune 500 Company. Helped grow my IT career/experience immensely during my tenure

    Cons

Company culture is changing/realigning in IT (not for the better). changes introduced last year resulted in long hours, finger-pointing and a general under-appreciation and dissatisfaction with IT as a whole from IT employees & end-users. These changes also introduced a structure that does not offer very many opportunities for internal employees to grow or get promoted due to forced specialization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

IT management needs to value IT personnel and technology in general and cut back on some of the drastic changes made over the past year in order to compromise with employees. I'd still be working here today if this were the case

IT is a critical part of the business structure these days and changes are causing many good IT people that have been long-standing/outstanding employees to reconsider their career options.

I worked at SPX full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits were good until it was bought by SPX. Direct supervisor was great and encouraged taking on personal projects to build experience and understanding of other departments.

    Cons

Bought out by public company with share holders to satisfy. SPX is shutting down the plant after 1 year of ownership. Lack of accountability on the shop floor. Some floor supervisors are just there to collect paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You know where the problem was, take charge and hold people accountable for their actions or lack thereof.

I have been working at SPX

    Pros

Good compensation, a wide variety of products to offer customers and a chance to move around the business and gain valuable experience

    Cons

The culture is very shut down. Very little social interaction among an older generation. No innovation or continuous improvement pushed at operational level. constant change that does not improve company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

learn what lean is. understand we do not do it today. Focus on the employees and not the shareholders

    Pros

Reasonable benefits and good people who are willing to work long and hard to get the job done

    Cons

Reorganize too often and is over matrixed with a lack of executive clarity around corporate enterprise goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less is more. Clearly understand what you want and what it takes to get what you are asking for, commit, then support your resources.

    Long Road to Improvement

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Houston, TX
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Houston, TX

I worked at SPX full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Competitive compensation, site management recognizes that there are organizational deficiencies, solid backlog position for at least a year (or more). Building a pool of excellent staff & mid-level management. This will be a great place for someone who has a strong desire to experience grass-roots organizational change in a small-ish group within a large corporation.

    Cons

The organizational deficiencies are crippling, management is unable to build or articulate a concensus roadmap to improvement (I believe that they are moving in the right direction, but too slowly to impact 2012 & perhaps 2013). The top-level corporate culture (as stated & communicated from Charlotte) is definitely good & noteworthy, but it has not yet taken root in Houston.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not be afraid of or overly cautious about change; the Houston facility has fantastic potential that can be unlocked with a plan & commitment from management that invites employee participation & input. There is a wealth of knowledge & experience that needs to be transferred from the individual level to the institutional level & it will not happen without more commitment from the top. Be more concerned with building a sustainable set of processes that will allow visibility into next year than with the next month of shipments; the month is important, but at what cost?

I have been working at SPX

    Pros

Flexible, People are friendly. Opportunties to grow

    Cons

They manage business with short outlook that only extends to the next quarter. Poor benefits, health insurance is self funded and you pay based on your salary. Bonus is used in the calculation of health insurance premium whether you make the bonus or not but yet all other benefits the bonus is taken out of the calculation. For example on the company paid life insurance. Cheap and skimpy on the bennies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage to the year not the quarter, provide better benefits
