Good company with great benefits, but struggling to focus on next step.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsGreat people doing a variety of interesting things made this an interesting company to work for. The benefits were top notch, including 4 weeks of vacation from the start. The companies products and services were right up my alley.

ConsCompany has morphed away from R&D to be more of a pure Defense Contractor. The current climate in that sector has caused them to struggle with what to focus on next as they keep trying to return to their comfort zone. Resulted in two rounds of layoffs in two years and loss of investment in the future.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange takes time, so make the commitment for the long term. Even when it's hard.

Good company but is there a career opportunity?

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Syracuse, NY

ProsExcellent benefits and retirement plan. The work environment is clean and organized. Tools and equipment are new/ state of the art and maintained. Flexibility in scheduling and vacation time; I do not think I have ever heard of anyone being denied a request for time off. Employees work well and make deadlines. Tuition support continued education in degree programs. A regular weekly pay check.

ConsIt’s just a regular weekly pay check. The company has become stagnant. Understandable limitation in the defense industry have cause the company to loose career opportunities, but positions that open are given to outside people instead of promotion from within the corporation. Mentoring and employee growth are a thing of the past. Middle management are not managers. They do not have the skill set to mentor teams and grow their people.

Advice to Senior Management360 reviews are useless because we do not have managers in place that help their teams grow skill sets with their employee’s career paths mapped out. The review should be used to gain an understanding of what employees are good at and developing a path for them based on opportunities within the company that will open. Aligning people with future career paths as they open so mentoring and growth occurs for each employee. Management is about teaching and growing your people and your team. Under no circumstance should and employee ever have to be hired from outside of the company umbrella unless it is an entry level position or a completely new division of the organization. Regain SRC “Soul” by investing in your team!

    Great Company, Lack of Organization

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Dayton, OH

ProsThe company really invests in its employees. Extremely flexible schedules, with great culture.

ConsLack of organization. Management seems to place employees from one project to the next without really getting their feet wet. Tasks are handed out with a severe lack of definition.

Advice to Senior ManagementDesign some kind of process that allows developers to quickly tackle tasks rather than waste time trying to figure out what's expected.

Great initial experience, things started going downhill when the company changed direction and went Defense Contractor.

    Logistics (Former Employee) Syracuse, NY

    ProsGood benefits and clean bathrooms

ConsLost their uniqueness and identity. Decided they wanted to be more like Lockheed Martin and lost their edge. I have never seen a company with such great promise, so quickly deteriorate.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be a wasted effort to give SRC/SRCTec management any type of good advice. They would not know what to do with it.

Great place if your purpose in life is to get a paycheck

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Syracuse, NY

ProsSRC is a great company to work for if the reason you get out of bed in the morning is to get a paycheck. They have some of the best salaries and benefits in the area, bar none. Even through tough economic times they have kept their benefits package pretty amazing. This will probably stay true for at least the next 5-10 years as long as you can avoid the layoff lotto. But ...

ConsThe leadership from middle to upper management has very little vision, or else very little knowledge at executing a vision. The whole company has been riding out some huge production contracts from 10+ years ago, losing money all the while (remember those great benefits?), with no ambition or innovative ideas finding a hold. A large chunk of the company seems to be just riding out the bank account waiting for their retirement. Disruptive technologies and ideas are met with blank stares at best, outright rejection at worst.

The recent RIFs are just the first sign of things to come. If nothing dramatically changes in the strategic vision and direction of this company, the trend will continue until things are back to a couple dozen RF engineers tinkering in the lab ... which seems to be the way they want it anyway.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou had a visionary leader and you let him go because he threatened your comfort level. Get some vision and REAL innovation, fast. Learn how technological products are designed and brought to market in 2014 (not 1992), or hire some people who can teach you.

    Best employer in Syracuse, NY

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Syracuse, NY

ProsThere are some great engineering challenges to work on at this company, and front-line management is great. Lots of autonomy in your job, pay and benefits are first rate. Great co-workers at the Syracuse location, opportunity is there to learn a lot of valuable skills.

ConsThe overhead of the company is getting too great, and this is going to hurt them going forward as they will be progressively less competitive. For a small company, they have a byzantine organizational chart with layers and layers of "vice president"-type jobs and "directors" etc. These "VPs" etc. are not at all strategic thinkers, they do not add value. The individual contributors and their immediate supervisors make the company work, along with a few of the "directors" or business area leaders that have very strong personal connections with $ men in the US govt.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Board is too local, too "clubby" and too status quo. At least half of them should be replaced with outsiders who are visionaries that know how to lead and grow a company in the defense business (people like Norm Augustine) or the technology business (pick your visionary Silicon Valley leader). After making these changes to the board, the company should hire a CEO with vision, a decisive leader in the mold of Bob Behler whom the current board regrettably dismissed.

    Great Place to Work

    Employee (Current Employee) Syracuse, NY

ProsReally good people who are focused on the same mission- help keep America safe and strong by protecting its people, environment and way of life.

Benefits are really good at SRC. Low premium costs on medical/ dental/ vision, etc. Great vacation/ holiday/ sick policies.

Employees support and help each other!

ConsI really can not think of any major cons. This site required 20 words so I guess I would just fill up this box with words. :)

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't lose site of the Corporate mission/ objectives.

    Great place to work.

Software Engineer II (Current Employee) Syracuse, NY

ProsGreat people and atmosphere. Everyone is really easy to get along always willing to help no matter what the problem is.
Work life balance more time spent with family than work is a plus.
Syracuse is great place to live even with the snow or maybe especially because of the snow.

ConsUse more software engineers every project seems to be understaffed for software.
Digital/Systems engineers get pulled into software development to help support.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more software engineers the work is there.

    Small defense contractor company

    Engineering (Former Employee) Syracuse, NY

ProsBenefits are pretty good. Retirement plan is great, pay is good for the area, health care, and vacation time.

The work can be challenging depending on what project you are working on.

ConsManagement organization is not very effective at applying the right fit for employees
Not very progressive in terms of organization, business strategy or engineering practices
The work seems to be less challenging or exciting coming down the pipe

Advice to Senior ManagementHave leaders focus on listening to the employees
Communicate the why and philosophy of decisions you make
Needs less management and more effective leaders

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
