I worked at SRC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fast paced environment, high standards, great rewards and recognition, good work-life balance; wonderful benefits (healthcare retirement etc...); nice mix of younger and older generation-integrated groups that work together. Your voice is def. heard and you can influence change. Promotions are from within, the invest in technology and their employees

    Cons

High Nepotism - lots of family and friends working here.....and if you are not one of the "favored" employees then they will not invest in you.-but if you ARE a favored employee the sky is the limit (beware-that could change quickly and your favorite status could change in a heartbeat)

I have been working at SRC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits and retirement plan. The work environment is clean and organized. Tools and equipment are new/ state of the art and maintained. Flexibility in scheduling and vacation time; I do not think I have ever heard of anyone being denied a request for time off. Employees work well and make deadlines. Tuition support continued education in degree programs. A regular weekly pay check.

    Cons

It’s just a regular weekly pay check. The company has become stagnant. Understandable limitation in the defense industry have cause the company to loose career opportunities, but positions that open are given to outside people instead of promotion from within the corporation. Mentoring and employee growth are a thing of the past. Middle management are not managers. They do not have the skill set to mentor teams and grow their people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

360 reviews are useless because we do not have managers in place that help their teams grow skill sets with their employee’s career paths mapped out. The review should be used to gain an understanding of what employees are good at and developing a path for them based on opportunities within the company that will open. Aligning people with future career paths as they open so mentoring and growth occurs for each employee. Management is about teaching and growing your people and your team. Under no circumstance should and employee ever have to be hired from outside of the company umbrella unless it is an entry level position or a completely new division of the organization. Regain SRC “Soul” by investing in your team!

I worked at SRC full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great people doing a variety of interesting things made this an interesting company to work for. The benefits were top notch, including 4 weeks of vacation from the start. The companies products and services were right up my alley.

    Cons

Company has morphed away from R&D to be more of a pure Defense Contractor. The current climate in that sector has caused them to struggle with what to focus on next as they keep trying to return to their comfort zone. Resulted in two rounds of layoffs in two years and loss of investment in the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change takes time, so make the commitment for the long term. Even when it's hard.

Great initial experience, things started going downhill when the company changed direction and went Defense Contractor.

    Pros

    Good benefits and clean bathrooms

    Cons

Lost their uniqueness and identity. Decided they wanted to be more like Lockheed Martin and lost their edge. I have never seen a company with such great promise, so quickly deteriorate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be a wasted effort to give SRC/SRCTec management any type of good advice. They would not know what to do with it.

I have been working at SRC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

SRC is a great company to work for if the reason you get out of bed in the morning is to get a paycheck. They have some of the best salaries and benefits in the area, bar none. Even through tough economic times they have kept their benefits package pretty amazing. This will probably stay true for at least the next 5-10 years as long as you can avoid the layoff lotto. But ...

    Cons

The leadership from middle to upper management has very little vision, or else very little knowledge at executing a vision. The whole company has been riding out some huge production contracts from 10+ years ago, losing money all the while (remember those great benefits?), with no ambition or innovative ideas finding a hold. A large chunk of the company seems to be just riding out the bank account waiting for their retirement. Disruptive technologies and ideas are met with blank stares at best, outright rejection at worst.

The recent RIFs are just the first sign of things to come. If nothing dramatically changes in the strategic vision and direction of this company, the trend will continue until things are back to a couple dozen RF engineers tinkering in the lab ... which seems to be the way they want it anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You had a visionary leader and you let him go because he threatened your comfort level. Get some vision and REAL innovation, fast. Learn how technological products are designed and brought to market in 2014 (not 1992), or hire some people who can teach you.

I worked at SRC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some great engineering challenges to work on at this company, and front-line management is great. Lots of autonomy in your job, pay and benefits are first rate. Great co-workers at the Syracuse location, opportunity is there to learn a lot of valuable skills.

    Cons

The overhead of the company is getting too great, and this is going to hurt them going forward as they will be progressively less competitive. For a small company, they have a byzantine organizational chart with layers and layers of "vice president"-type jobs and "directors" etc. These "VPs" etc. are not at all strategic thinkers, they do not add value. The individual contributors and their immediate supervisors make the company work, along with a few of the "directors" or business area leaders that have very strong personal connections with $ men in the US govt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Board is too local, too "clubby" and too status quo. At least half of them should be replaced with outsiders who are visionaries that know how to lead and grow a company in the defense business (people like Norm Augustine) or the technology business (pick your visionary Silicon Valley leader). After making these changes to the board, the company should hire a CEO with vision, a decisive leader in the mold of Bob Behler whom the current board regrettably dismissed.

Really good people who are focused on the same mission- help keep America safe and strong by protecting its people, environment and way of life.

Benefits are really good at SRC. Low premium costs on medical/ dental/ vision, etc. Great vacation/ holiday/ sick policies.

Employees support and help each other!
