I worked at SRC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very organized structure with the right types of people in the right positions (for the most part) - great leaders, talented engineers, responsive and capable technicians, visionary business developers, etc.

Not-for-profit status allowed lots of reinvestment into the employees - amazing benefits and plenty of company parties and events--fancy Christmas parties, chili cook-offs, monthly/quarterly birthday cake, even paper airplane contests.

Lots of young, talented engineers right out of college gave the department a vibrant atmosphere and lots of fresh ideas.

Great collaboration, rigorous design reviews, top-notch products, customer focus, high morale, reasonable work hours, not much else to ask for!

    Cons

    Located in Syracuse, NY

There was often a shortage of test equipment, making it hard to test engineering products in development.

The company had tried to grow too fast while I worked there--this diluted the talent pool in engineering somewhat and ultimately led to an unsustainable workforce (they had the first layoff in decades towards the end of my tenure there and additional layoffs afterwards).

It's a defense contractor, so all the cons that come along with being tied to the DoD for revenue applied here.

Salaries seemed a little below average

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't try to be Lockheed or Boeing or Harris--there are already enough of those, and they aren't really great companies.

I have been working at SRC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Good leadership, people and benefits.

    Cons

Not "competitive" pay. Not a clear path for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Combine sick leave and vacation into PTO. Reevaluate "competitive" pay scale. Create promotion paths.

I worked at SRC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Not much lately.
Managers have a phony and superficial emphasis on personal growth and "fun"

    Cons

Very limited upward opportunities even for the most talented. Many highly talented engineers have left to pursue other opportunities.
    Poor overall company strategy.
Human Resource political correctness police allowed to take over engineering.
    Severe nepotism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a strategy using the work force inputs, opinions and participation.
Stop trying to be a defense contractor.
Do NOT base corporate goals on "revenue targets".

I worked at SRC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good balance between work and family. People there have very good hearts and intentions. The historical record of the place indicates a pursuit of very good technology development and problems of real significance. The attention paid to the community is outstanding.

    Cons

The focus is now on being a defense contractor - slimy with no real vision While the leadership thinks it knows what research is - it doesn't . Like too many small companies that succeed for a while, the leaderships here rode a wave they didn't create. Bean counters have won and it is now a matter of time before the fall. As too many people say SRC doesn't stand for anything

I worked at SRC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fast paced environment, high standards, great rewards and recognition, good work-life balance; wonderful benefits (healthcare retirement etc...); nice mix of younger and older generation-integrated groups that work together. Your voice is def. heard and you can influence change. Promotions are from within, the invest in technology and their employees

    Cons

High Nepotism - lots of family and friends working here.....and if you are not one of the "favored" employees then they will not invest in you.-but if you ARE a favored employee the sky is the limit (beware-that could change quickly and your favorite status could change in a heartbeat)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work! It was a pleasure working for you and with you!

I have been working at SRC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits and retirement plan. The work environment is clean and organized. Tools and equipment are new/ state of the art and maintained. Flexibility in scheduling and vacation time; I do not think I have ever heard of anyone being denied a request for time off. Employees work well and make deadlines. Tuition support continued education in degree programs. A regular weekly pay check.

    Cons

It’s just a regular weekly pay check. The company has become stagnant. Understandable limitation in the defense industry have cause the company to loose career opportunities, but positions that open are given to outside people instead of promotion from within the corporation. Mentoring and employee growth are a thing of the past. Middle management are not managers. They do not have the skill set to mentor teams and grow their people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

360 reviews are useless because we do not have managers in place that help their teams grow skill sets with their employee’s career paths mapped out. The review should be used to gain an understanding of what employees are good at and developing a path for them based on opportunities within the company that will open. Aligning people with future career paths as they open so mentoring and growth occurs for each employee. Management is about teaching and growing your people and your team. Under no circumstance should and employee ever have to be hired from outside of the company umbrella unless it is an entry level position or a completely new division of the organization. Regain SRC “Soul” by investing in your team!

I worked at SRC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great people doing a variety of interesting things made this an interesting company to work for. The benefits were top notch, including 4 weeks of vacation from the start. The companies products and services were right up my alley.

    Cons

Company has morphed away from R&D to be more of a pure Defense Contractor. The current climate in that sector has caused them to struggle with what to focus on next as they keep trying to return to their comfort zone. Resulted in two rounds of layoffs in two years and loss of investment in the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change takes time, so make the commitment for the long term. Even when it's hard.

    Pros

    Good benefits and clean bathrooms

    Cons

Lost their uniqueness and identity. Decided they wanted to be more like Lockheed Martin and lost their edge. I have never seen a company with such great promise, so quickly deteriorate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be a wasted effort to give SRC/SRCTec management any type of good advice. They would not know what to do with it.
