    Pros

SRI is a place where world class research is done and important problems are addressed. The culture is very open to personal growth and program development. SRI is the type of organization that cares about employee welfare and celebrates employee accomplishments. A good mix of business focus with freedom to pursue interesting work.

    Cons

SRI is a nonprofit company so stock options and large bonus payments are not part of the compensation program. There is pressure to bring in new clients so researcher need to stay fpcused on the bottom line of their Projects finances.

    Advice to Management

Stay focussed on promoting collaboration between research business divisions. Have the vice presidents of the various business divisions communicate division specific goals and accomplishments to the entire enterprise.

    Pros

Cutting edge research - always exciting to come to work. Fair benefits. Great flexibility and work/life balance. Good management team. Great job security - no fear of being laid off.

    Cons

High cost of living in the immediate area - homes in Menlo Park start at $1 Million. So you either need to rent a small apartment or commute 2 hours everyday. Also, it's sometimes frustrating how different parts of the company are unwilling to work together.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work! And, try to break down the walls between different orgs / labs. There should be more sharing of talent and resources... and I shouldn't have to deal with 3 different IT help desks.

    Pros

The company does research in many fields, so it's always interesting to see all of the cutting edge things your colleagues are doing. The lower level management at my satellite office is pretty good - hands off and very supportive of continuing education.

    Cons

Working outside of the main campus at Menlo Park, I don't tend to identify so much with SRI, but my satellite office. My satellite office doesn't have the climate of a college campus that I hear about from the main offices in Menlo Park, which is unfortunate.

    Pros

SRI gives a nice blend of Corporate culture and Academic research. You get to work with some of the smartest people in the industry working on some of the coolest research topics. Its pretty much an open environment where everyone can pitch in their own ideas and explore new things.

    Cons

    none that I know of

    Advice to Management

more internal funding for future research areas will be very helpful

    Pros

This Institute is the most under rated places to work in Silicon Valley. It's everything you want in a job community. The researchers here are nice, talented, and ethical. Not a lot of weirdness or out-of-control egos. There are a few quirky SRI artifacts that wind up being interesting at the very least. I believe with the right attitude, you can affect change at SRI. It's just a little slow in terms of decision making. The campus has incredible potential (70 acres in the heart of Menlo Park). The cafeteria is pretty awesome.

    Cons

Sure. This place has issues just like any work environment. It was always little things that bothered me like the bathrooms from the 40's, and a blindness to certain things like composting, putting in bike racks for commuters, etc. And, a tolerance that maybe goes on too long for mediocrity on the operational side of the business. Ermagard, there I go complaining about facilities again.

    Advice to Management

Great job, just not enough of you. The following roles would be helpful additions to the senior management team: an operational president, CIO, and maybe a VP of strategy. Seriously, you're understaffed. Please hire more business development people. Perhaps someone with expertise in current Internet business models would be a useful to the organization. Now is the time to leverage the huge Siri (purchased by Apple) win. Also, please consider spending more on SRI's employment brand. You'll attract more talent.

    Pros

SRI has a great history of innovation and this culture fuels its forward progress. It is one of the few institutions in Silicon Valley that has excellent integrity and ethics. If you can contribute to the success of your projects, you'll have a rewarding career here.

    Cons

SRI, like all research-oriented contractors, is subject to the influence of the economy. When the government and private businesses are not investing in research, it can be a challenge to find a projects to which you can contribute.
