    Pros

Supervisors are there to guide your career path and co-workers are intelligent and highly skilled / knowledgeable. HR is very helpful and responsive. I felt fully supported by the administrative staff. It's a great corporate culture of folks who think outside of the box and aren't afraid to show it, pleasant people to work with, I've made friends with co-workers that will last long after I leave the company.

    Cons

Commuting from/to SF on the Caltrain is the only con. But they provide transportation vouchers so it's a free commute!

    Pros

Close to the train station, Princeton University and major highways. Nice people

    Cons

Management is mostly concerned with preserving their own positions. Everyone comes to work each day wondering if they will be laid off. The building is in terrible condition and California treats Princeton like a red haired step child.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of waiting for commercial property value to rise just sell the Princeton campus now. Princeton University will buy it. Heck they already own the Rt 1 frontage. The building is an embarrassment as is the management.

I have been working at SRI International

    Pros

I love the team I work with and feel hugely supported in my personal and professional goals. Performance reviews are seen as a time to reflect, get constructive feedback, and express preferences in the direction each person wants to take his or her work in the upcoming year. That said, I also get large-company perks like commuter checks, great benefits, etc.

    Cons

Leadership of the overall company doesn't necessarily understand/value the work that each division is doing. The same "superstars" frequently steal the spotlight even when others are doing great and profitable work.

Products and Services Division: A difficult experience

I worked at SRI International full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You may get to work with a few really smart people.

    Cons

The Products and Services (P&S) Division created a Connecticut office and is trying to transfer all the work to that location by laying off people in Princeton. They are hiring people from the CT. Smart people are leaving Princeton. The "Products and Services" stems from an R&D company but is trying to emulate a products company. Management and team has no real commercial product experience and is trying to compete in a competitive environment. They have recently failed major projects with big clients.

Work life balance sucks - management wants people to work many hours and has no regard for people's personal lives. Many employees are getting burnt out.and leaving when they get the opportunity. New employees are realizing this and regretting that they joined the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to SRI Menlo Park: Remove top management of P&S and you will solve most of your problems with performance. Morale is extremely low in Princeton - look a the turnover rate and you will understand.

I have been working at SRI International full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good management, plenty of freedom, lot of flexibility, great work life balance, good projects. SRI has a good reputation and an illustrious history. It is a very bottom up PI-driven organization. If you are able to find a good niche and long-term funding, it can be a very good place to work. There is ample of opportunity to work with leading researchers in the USA and abroad.

    Cons

you will most likely not get rich working here. no stock options. salary is good, but probably not as good as the rest of the valley. The social life is rather terrible. I made very few friends during my time here. Most of my connections were outside the campus. There are some people who prioritize politics over scientific content.

    Pros

Interesting work, good people, pretty good workk life balance in some groups.

    Cons

Salary vs cost of living in the bay area, advancement potential, depending on what group you're in you may be somewhat segregated from the rest of the population at Menlo and thus you don't get to interact outside your group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More engineering R&D where a client isn't already lined up

I worked at SRI International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent hard working scientists. Potential for good growth with new management.

    Cons

Management is horrible. There is no direction, very much like an academic environment, you had better bring in your own money. Very little room for advancement, you need to bring in your own money. Management has no issues about lying to get you in the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of your senior management and revamp the entire biosciences division

I have been working at SRI International full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    -- Interesting research
    -- Great work-life balance
    -- Fantastic benefits

    Cons

-- Poor salary, just slightly above academic postdocs
-- Culture and facilities feel like a TV show in the 1970s
    -- Bureaucracy can be ridiculous
-- Funding is highly susceptible to government funding problems

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being a postdoc here feels isolating at times. The average age of some divisions is quite high and it feels like the younger staff don't have much in common with the rest of the company.

I have been working at SRI International full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent long term job stability and friendly atmosphere. Little to no competitiveness among employees. Reasonable benefits. It is a good place to work in the later years of your career just before retirement.

    Cons

Almost no growth opportunities with in the company. Salary is not competitive for the area. No real excitement find and tackle complex problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you wish to retain your younger crowd, you should focus on developing them. Spend a little extra money and effort to help them move up the ranks quickly and you will very likely retain them for longer.
