I have been working at SRI International (More than 3 years)

    Pros

--Positive work environment, good collegiality, good camaraderie --Colleagues who are intelligent, thoughtful and professional --Accommodations for people with children and staff who need to commute from far away

    Cons

--Low salaries given the nature and complexity of the work --In certain cases underfunded projects which leads to tasks being completed in a shorter amount of time than they really need, or people working beyond their paid time to complete tasks --Lack of investment in helping junior researches develop new skill sets they don't have any experience in

I worked at SRI International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work life balance. Many show up late, take a long lunch and clock out early. Management likes to celebrate minor achievements with open bar nights in palo and expensive dinners in Menlo.

    Cons

I left industry to join SRI and found the it very hard to integrate into the culture here. I also found the average skill level to be rather low, near garage hobbyist levels and the portfolio reflects that. Anyone of merit or quality doesn't spend much time at SRI; the rest spend a career there.

    Advice to Management

    No advice, they'll keep rowing.

    Pros

Great environment to grow in. Good company culture and very smart people.

    Cons

Facilities are a bit old as far as office space but do have a lot of nice equipment.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice to management at this time. It was great when I was there.

I worked at SRI International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Diverse set of employees, interesting work, gives employees great latitude in setting their own career paths. Better opportunity for collaboration if located in Menlo Park.

    Cons

Barriers remain in organization to collaborate between different labs and locations. It's easy to get someone to help you out with your project, but much harder to get involved with others' projects. Need more focus on commercial customers, as traditional government funding has become constrained and competed for. This is a work in progress by top-level (CEO) management, but remains to be seen if this will be fixed.

    Advice to Management

Provide better collaborative (incentives) to better use in-house expertise on projects. Work on being less compartmentalized between individual labs.

I have been working at SRI International full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Diverse work. You will be trained in a variety of techniques that would be useful to move on in biotechnology.

    Cons

Low pay for the amount of work assigned. Favoritism on the part of management. Unrealistic expectations.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to retain staff. The work is diverse and interesting, but the rewards are little and the employees feel as though they are not important.

I worked at SRI International full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Once you know how to get on projects, it is up to you and your project leads to make your career trajectory. You can try new things sometimes and grow in the new area, which I liked. I also think hours are flexible and are friendly to working mothers. I miss the collegial culture with smart, fun people!

    Cons

At the beginning, it felt like never ending job search process as you constantly need to be on projects to meet your sold time goal. Facility is old.

I worked at SRI International full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly and helpful coworkers and supervisors, welcoming work environment, free caltrain pass and caltrain parking, lots of collaboration across division hence you get to learn many things.

    Cons

pay is abit at the lower range, but that's usually the case for non-profit organization. Benefit is average (my co-pay for dental was kind of high).

    Pros

Employees treated very well, good benefits and retirement plan

    Cons

Merit increases are very low, no matter what your performance is you get the same as everyone else, even those who do not provide good results.

    Advice to Management

Take a closer look at employee contributions and pay accordingly

I have been working at SRI International full-time

    Pros

SRI tries out many ideas, the technology of the company has no bounds

    Cons

Practical application of the intelligence is lacking

    Advice to Management

You cannot change the world if the product cannot be produced at a reasonable cost
