Pros
very flexible with scheduling and able to accomodate the various needs of the employee. A very good place to work.
Cons
There are not a lot of downfalls to working with SSM. I guess one would be the performance review process, it's time consuming.
Pros
benefits
clean
lots of different clinical departments
shift options
cafeteria
central location decent parking
some great doctors
some good nurses there
good training department
Cons
They talk about the nurses as if they are nuns, praising their supposed willingness to angels of mercy with no needs of their own.
The reality is that they expect you to work sometimes dangerously under-staffed and not terribly well paid.
Lack of upper management support when something goes really wrong.
They will punish you for a WC injury unless you do your regular job despite orders against it and without complaining, and pretend they have not asked you to do so, but that you insist.
They are terrified of firing a minority staff person, so they insult the excellent minority staff by forcing them and non-minorities to work with them indefinitely, even if their performance is AWFUL or even dangerous. If you're managing this employee, it's hands-off or out YOU go.
Advice to Senior Management
Minority people who do their jobs well and have self-respect and a good work ethics are mortified about the bad ones, and insulted and angry that you let the bad ones run amok, no matter the particular minority.
"It's all about the money" and it shows.
Stop punishing people for WC injuries you put them at unfair risk to have via under staffing.
Pros
hard working staff; pleasant (most of them) at working level
Cons
Management in my department was based in St. Louis. The ended up hiring a inept manager in OKC. 15 of us started out as "temps" and were promised work (without benefits) until Dec. 23rd. When asked in meetings if we would be kept until then, they positively said "Yes". They ended up cutting us short (right before Christmas with children to feed at home) and then after 8 months of hard work, (and after telling us there would be "permanent positions" for us), they made us go through a lengthy and cumbersome interview process. After it was all said and done, they ended up keeping a few and hiring all brand new employees to fill the rest of our positions. Don't believe the Catholic Hype!
Advice to Senior Management
Look up the definition of respect and loyalty. We all worked hard for you only to be replaced by outsiders when you had tons of hardworking quality people willing to work for you. Get another Epic team manager - the one you have is worthless and biased.
Pros
Salaries, benefits, location, large organization, cafeteria on premisses
Cons
lack of appropriate management personnel, lack of additional training opportunities
Advice to Senior Management
listen to the employees, promote teamwork
Pros
The staff is awesome. You are treated with respect and kindness. Everyone is in a good mood and says hello when passing you, whether they know you or not. Very good atmosphere to work in. Just makes you want to help that much more. Makes you very proud to work for a company with so much compassion for not only the patients but the employees also. Everyone in each department is very helpful.
Cons
I wish there were more charitable ways to get involved other than money. Maybe like a food drive.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work.
Pros
Co-workers are generally pleasant and the work-life balance is very good. Within IT, a number of managers are very competent and care about their employees and the work.
Cons
While a number of managers are good, just as many are indifferent to the work. The overwhelmingly disparaging condition is with regard to the compensation system. SSM adheres to a flat model of compensation adjustment, providing no allowance for merit-based pay. This situation has bred a great deal apathy throughout the ranks with the lion's share of work being performed by a small percentage of employees.
Advice to Senior Management
The implementation of a merit-based compensation system and allowing managers the freedom to reward their employees appropriately may reduce the level of mediocrity among employees.
Pros
SSM ensure their employees are properly trained. They are always continuing education for the employees. There is alot of Spirit at SSM.
Cons
The medical insurance to too expensive. There are not enough hospitals available to work in the SSM industry. Therefore, room for relocating is limited.
Advice to Senior Management
The monthly meetings are very helpful to the employees, however, sometimes the actions discussed in the meetings needs to be enforced and carried out.
Pros
Health Insurance is cheap, but your restricted to SSM providers (Hospitals and Physicians)
Cons
I worked in the Finance Org under the St. Louis Network. SSM has a tough time competing in St. Louis.. They don't have the capital, outdated facilities, poor physicians, etc. Aside from HI, benefits are terrible. Vacation starts at 24 days (includes holidays). Many people were frequently stressed out and appeared overworked. My experience involved working for someone that was a SEVERE micro manager. Stay away from anything decision support related.
Advice to Senior Management
Look into reasons why you lose people. It's almost always because of a bad manager. If costs are a concern, you should consider the rehire/retaining/learning curve expenses bad managers cost you.
Pros
Flexibility, nice people to work with
Cons
Unfair, political, unconsistent processes, resistant to change
Advice to Senior Management
Incompetent (but nice) people are running the departments
Pros
The children and families are amazing. They are the most rewarding part of the small community. The benefits are fantastic.
Cons
The director is not the most fair person. She is inconsistent with expectations. She also rarely gives praise. SHe is nice, away from the workplace.
Advice to Senior Management
Be consistent and praise your hardworking staff. They want to wotk with you and help implement healthy changes that all organizations should move toward.
