I worked at STA Travel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Laid back attitude and environment- listened to music all day, no dress code, reasonable breaks -The spirit of the company is positive and upbeat- lots of young people -A few fun events for Halloween, holiday parties, potlucks -Travel benefits and opportunities (travel allowance every month, but mostly sales people get all the travel benefits and opportunities) -Potential bonuses for achieving goals

    Cons

-Low pay -Company was struggling to keep up with change/competition and employees were affected by this in different ways (layoffs, branch closures) -Felt like there wasn't anywhere I could grow into at that particular location

    Advice to Management

The people behind the scenes (not just sales!) matter too- it seems they got most of the recognition and praise. Hire leaders who really care about their employees.

I worked at STA Travel full-time

    Pros

Fun company culture, can earn up to 5 weeks of PTO, sales incentives, great travel opportunities and great staff.

    Cons

Pay is very minimal especially when you don't bonus. Agents will make much more because of bonuses than managers will. Little incentive to move up.

I worked at STA Travel (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good health coverage, awesome amount of personal time off for travel, illness, etc. Fun company, fun staff

    Cons

Pressure to party (not as much of an issue if you're younger), ridiculously low base salary, zero work/life balance

    Advice to Management

It was such a mess when I left, I don't even know at this point.

I have been working at STA Travel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company culture and benefits were good.

    Cons

Salary was below living standards for a big city. Senior management was out of touch with the day to day on the sales floor. Always changing procedures and bonus structures - could be very frustrating at times.

  6. Wonderful people, travel benefits, opportunities to grow. Weak areas include IT support and Senior Leadership

I worked at STA Travel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great opportunties to travel. Young and young-at-heart atmosphere. Fun activities, upbeat, casual (extremely casual) environment. Very open middle management. Decent pay for entry level and opportunity to grow if you apply yourself.

    Cons

There is almost no money put into support roles. The support team reports to seperate management in the UK and are given different goals than the sales teams so they do not work as one. Senior management has encouraged them to not work as one due to their own personal conflicts. Most of upper management has been removed as cost savings so communiation iand engagement is poor from their level.

    Advice to Management

With STA US being a small company there should be more engagement with leadership. It is frustating to see leaders come to town only to sit in a conference room all day or work remotely from their hotel room. Operations and Sales needs to find common ground as the current situation hurts the business.

I worked at STA Travel full-time

    Pros

Great vacation and time off Good elements of a training program Comfortable work enviroment -

    Cons

Limited opportunity to move up with ongoing downsizing that has gone on for years Poor communication Outdated products and understanding of the industry The stress of trying to achieve the required results without a viable plan that can be implemented Long history of over paying the sales team and under paying the support staff

    Advice to Management

Company values and vision is not a marketing scheme Month to month planning is not a viable plan for growth - short or long-term

I worked at STA Travel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Travel benefits International perspective Cool people to work with (again, depends on which location you're at) Overseas training or meeting if you are at manager level

    Cons

Some seniors in the office are hard to work while some of them lack leadership to lead the team. Perhaps more training on people skills are needed.

    Advice to Management

Management people are pretty much cool and you can learn a lot from them, though you need more time to look at what's going on in a smaller office location.

I worked at STA Travel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Involved in many different projects -Get to know the people you are working with really well

    Cons

-Terrible location -Poor compensations -Absolutely no training -Inadequate resources -Lack of trust from rest of company -Poor management -Blind leadership -No structure -No Processes -Ridiculously small budget for expectations -Understaffed

    Advice to Management

Hire some managers who actually know what they are doing. They can talk the talk but they can't walk the walk.

I worked at STA Travel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Relaxed work environment Casual dress code Fair Pay Decent benefits Some mid-level management seems to “get it”

    Cons

I really wish this company made more money in the US. This company has a great culture, but the bottom line is forcing them to deviate from that at times. Lots of recent cutbacks and layoffs, but I suspect that will help with a turn around, and make this a fun place to work once again… eventually

    Advice to Management

You know you have a good company culture. That should be preserved and seen as one of your biggest assets.

I have been working at STA Travel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A relaxed and fun work environment Decent benefits Casual dress code Travel benefits (seldom, but they're there) Ability to have an input in creative decisions (From a marketing standpoint)

    Cons

No trust in Senior Management Constant layoffs (Almost every other month) Zero budgets to work with from a creative standpoint London management is completely out of touch with today's customer in the US: Incorporating all divisions under one global umbrella without the considerations of cultural differences is a recipe for disaster. What works in our UK, Australia and even South Africa divisions may not work in the US but they're enforced on the business anyway without any market research of who the target customer is in the US and what they care about. Recommendations from employees go unnoticed Senior management comes and goes and doesn't seem to really care There have been 3 Managing Directors in the last two years There has been 8 different management changes within Marketing in the last 3-4 years Employees are hired for one job and end up doing something entirely different Overworked

    Advice to Management

Listen to the customer and listen to your employees who ARE your target customer. Invest and reward your employees, they love the company and what it stands for and are willing to fight to keep it afloat but upper management has crushed that passion through its management style and treatment of its employees.
