    Employment or Servitude

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSolid company with very good benefits.

ConsAlthough STERIS is a solid company, I feel management at this company do not believe ethics and morals are important principles to follow when dealing with other human beings. I also feel that there no equality at STERIS because management believes they are well above their staff. I mean, they truly believe that even the way you speak to management should be different from anyone else you speak to simply because they are management. STERIS Corporation management encourages a culture of back stabbing and favoritism and they have already a stereotype of what a good employee is: so if you fall a little bit far from what they believe a good employee is, they you are ostracize and isolate you. They love young people and even though they hire one or two middle age people, these individuals are "rarely" considered for a fair opportunity within the company. They will tell you this is not true but they will hit you exactly on your ego, hurting your self steem and mining your confidence so it really will look like it is your fault. Thus, if you decide to work there, remember, if you are between the ages 18 and 30 ( being optimistic) you are in a good position but do not ever challenge management even if you are right, now if you are over 30 more close to 40, I would look for a more progressive open mind company who understand the value of experience and professionalism. Steris makes easy money in the Health Care industry. They do not feel there is much need of a fair management who cares about "every employee". STERIS manages like a militar regime, brain wash where younger people have little critical thinking to understand.

Advice to Senior ManagementI feel that management at steris needs to be retrained in understanding what is really like to have an open mind to what the employees have to say, do not label people STERIS. Team work is exactly about variety, have more tolerance for what is different, understand real creativity and diversity.

    Not For Professionals

    Management (Current Employee)

ProsI cannot think of any pros. See the cons.

ConsUnprofessional management. Difficult to maintain integrity in this environment. Low pay results in employees with little to no experience/competence. Employees are overworked and under pressure to cut corners. Money is the only driver for this company.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean up your act.

    Greedy, dishonest and soul crushing.

    Field Service Representative (Former Employee)
    Toronto, ON (Canada)

ProsIf you can tolerate the B.S., then you might get a company vehicle, phone, 407 etc.

ConsSteris sees their employees as parts in a machine. After they squeeze every bit of work out of you, and you need stress leave, they will just fire you instead of honouring their employment contract with you. Be prepared to sue to get your due.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some ethics, a proper engineering department, and actually test your equipment designs before shipping them to customers.

    High Expectations - Poor Experience

    Regulatory (Former Employee)

ProsSTERIS offers a competitive paycheck, great benefits and a convenient/safe location. Company looks great on paper. Large player in the Medical Device Industry.

ConsOverbearing and ineffective direction. Limited and poorly executed vision. Very high turnover rate. Unprofessional, often verbally abusive work environment. Low moral. Difficult to manage day to day responsibilities due to lack of consistency in management and no true standardization in procedures. Inadequate internal training/no external training offered for new hires or company cross overs. Unrealistic expectations considering lack of quality training offered. Poor work/life balance due to constant "emergencies" overshadowing time sensitive day to day responsibilities resulting from lack of planning/direction/effective management etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer adequate training and time for employees to gain confidence in independent decision making, remembering this does not typically happen in several months. Re-evaluate structure when turnover is so high and moral is so low. Provide some across the board consistency; have confidence in decisions and stick to them.

Former Contractor - Beware this outsourcer

Senior .NET Applications Developer/Architect (Former Employee)

    ProsHas lots of technology
    Has a stronghold in Healthcare
    It has a global presence
    Not afraid to spend money
    New headquarters looks great.

    ConsMany employees seemed pretty rude
Lots of bad office politics take place in the IT department
    Outsources to India
    Uses lots of H-1B visas
    Moved Plants to Mexico.
Has no real corporate identity, its a shame, i was really suprised by the chaos.
    Management was a let down.
Doesn't value domestic talent. Saving a buck and getting sub-par work is good enough.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some decent Full-time programmers who know how to build enterprise applications.
Think about getting a younger management team, with new ideas.

    Needs improvement

Prefer Not to Say (Current Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsCan't think of many. At least the paychecks do not bounce

ConsSadly the upper and middle management don't have a handle on daily operations. Apparently their idea of good management is piling on more work and responsibility without giving you the authority to accomplish your job. In addition pay and benefits are far below the competition. Your reward for working 70 hours a week? A bad review and no pay increase.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a good look at how a system works before changing it. Simply cutting staff and loading the work on the remaining personnel is a recipe for disaster over the long term.

Last resort company to work for...

    Sales (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsI'm not sure there are any pro's...most of the folks who are not in management are wonderful people, but management is a complete debacle with limited potential.

ConsNo opportunity for upward mobility, zero internal support and product development, minimal training or support for sales force, inexperienced leadership, unclear company direction, compensation packages that are unjustified compared to day-to-day duties and responsibilities, terrible work/life balance and unrealistic expectations. Only consider Steris if its a last resort and you've exhausted all other job searches.

    Advice to Senior ManagementQuit!
