    Pros

Great corporate location in Mentor, Ohio; solid company; current executive management is leading the company in the right direction to optimize growth and profits.

    Cons

Over the past five years, the office "perks" have been minimized - nothing life-changing, but the new CEO cut back a lot of frivolous waste. As a shareholder, I must agree with this approach, but as an employee, it was sad to see some of the changes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. I'm enjoying the security, stability, and profitability of our company, and I would recommend STERIS as a responsible employer.

STERIS is growing into a mature company slowly.

    Pros

STERIS is a growing company in an emerging field that offers many opportunities for personal development while maintaining the security of a large organization. The FDA regulated environment is a highly marketable skill. The offices are located in potentially overlooked cities, but this yields a greater opportunity to stretch a salary while still enjoying the benefits of establish communities.

    Cons

STERIS has yet to evolve into a cohesive company. While it 20 years old, it does not act like an established company in many respects, and lacks infrastructure to support running efficiently. The different locations each have different cultures, and act like the companies they were before STERIS purchased them. Employees will still complain and say the old days were better, or corporate has no idea how to run things, and only care about the stock price. Recent changes in upper management have contributed to a culture where no one is sure what will happen next, and while the changes may be positive and solve some of the above problems, it is difficult in a tough economy to wait and see, and this can cause the best employees to find jobs elsewhere, and the ones with less marketable skills to remain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Address underlying differences in the culture between locations. Explain changes more effectively, through honest communications of good and bad results direct to th employees. Don't compare the company's benefits to only old style rust-belt manufacturers, or modern medical companies, as neither is an exact match. Recruit past the stereotypes of the locations, and make people want to join the company for positive reasons, not just because they're unemployed from a downsizing.

    Pros

No one over your shoulder. Freedom to set your schedule and take care of the customers.

    Cons

Skills required to perform job are not compensated appropriately. Often can be a dangerous job. Little room for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

STERIS seemed to rest on their laurels. At one time they were the premier sterilization company, but with little advancements the competitors caught up. The competitors were able to offer good instruments at a much lower cost than STERIS. Reward the employees who you value. 2-3% annual increase does not show this.

    Pros

Benefits are good, PTO is adequate. Location within Mentor is good. Some opportunity to move around or advance.

    Cons

The pay is not good, seems to be at or below industry standard. Morale is low across the board. Proper management isn't priority, production is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of those who make sacrifices for the company, fire the freeloaders.

    Pros

Good people with integrity and customer focus, good contract presence.

    Cons

Lack of career advancement opportunities, average compensation, slow to market new products vs. competition. Average marketing department sometimes slow to respond, or unable to offer appropriate level of expertise to field sales/customer needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in "training up" internal employees for future advancement and leadership opportunities. Improve internal talent management.

    Pros

clean working environment. At least they are offering a severance package, if they let us see it. They buy us doughnuts once in awhile.

    Cons

poor management. don't care at all about employees, or developing them. Favoritism. Bad management has lead to my plants closedown. Many jobs lost. Over 18 years service..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You say you want to hear what employees have to say. But then you shun them when they do voice themselves. Most of the management responsible for the plant shutdown are gone. And the current ones will just take new jobs within the company and could careless about the people who's jobs were eliminated. Develop the employees that you have. And don't blame the fda or the employees for the plant shutdown. It was poor management that caused the shutdown.

Current Employee - Field Service Representative  in  New York, NY
Current Employee - Field Service Representative in New York, NY

    Pros

The company treats it's employees well. The benefits are dirt cheap and good, the car perks are great for field service, the 401K matching is very good compared to anywhere else, there is a great measure of autonomy in the job, little micromanaging, focus on safety.

    Cons

The pay blows, although its half made up for in benefits, etc, the pay REALLY blows. Work life balance is hard to achieve at times, leadership is lost, product quality isn't what it used to be, metrics are killing the service workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on buying companies and corporate direction is fine, although likely overrated in terms of actual shareholder value. If there is any focus on the service team at all, it is sorely inadequate or misguided. Pay scale forces the good people out and will never attract any top talent. Metrics tied to bonuses lead to unethical decisions across the workforce, number manipulation is rampant and will end up with FDA violations or worse. New hire training (service) is broken, not from a product standpoint, but from a procedure perspective. No one knows what to do. Siebel is an disaster. Customer focused decisions will make for good service, if you try to tailor the service business to your needs (surgical division) and ignore massive decline in customer service that accompanies the choices by looking at metrics (fake data), eventually the customers will go elsewhere... By the time it effects the sales numbers it will be to late and STERIS' reputation will already be tarnished.

    Pros

Some interesting products and medical device experience

    Cons

    1- Limited opportunity for advancement
2 - Marketing makes Engineering decisions
3 - Lack of respect for technical people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It seems pointless to offer any advice to management. As with many modern corporations the cult of the MBA runs the company instead of engineers which limits the ability of the companies to create new products.
