STP is a great place to work and I was sad to leave. My wife's career change caused us to relocate.

    Health Physicist (Former Employee)
    Wadsworth, TX

ProsTeamwork, mutual respect, focus on safety; the company backs its employees.

ConsIt's eight miles west of Wadsworth Texas on FM 521.

Advice to Senior ManagementParking, Parking, Parking.

    Lack of Development Opportunities

    Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsFriendly workplace, good benefits, good 4x10 work schedule when not in an outage/turn around.

ConsMany work processes are still managed like its the 70's or 80's, a majority of workforce is set in their ways and work against change, development/training for engineers is mismanaged and lacking, mentorship and knowledge transfer is not properly fostered.

Advice to Senior ManagementTackle work force development as hard as the "Cost Savings Initiative". The next generation does not have a pension anchoring them down and will look for the opportunities if they arent available at STP.

    Decent place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe company is reasonably well run, but not exceedingly so. Compensation is on par with employers in the field.

ConsThere is a general feel that the new CEO (Koehl) is not in it for the long haul but rather to make his mark in cost cutting and leave. While we are not a publicly traded company, there is also the feel that quarterly or annual earnings and expenditures are driving decision making.

This coupled with the remote location and lack of amenities in the area make working here hard.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork harder to have personnel to understand the long term goals of the company and how they fit into it. Work better with the bargaining unit.

Good coworkers, and great 4X10 schedule

    Engineer (Current Employee)
    Wadsworth, TX

ProsThe coworkers are great, and the culture is good. My favorite part is only working four days a week, and the excitement of working in an operating facility.

ConsIt is located in the middle of nowhere. The closest city of any size is Bay City, and the closest city with over 20K people is Lake Jackson. A lot of people commute, but with working 10 hours a day, adding an extra couple of hours for commuting isn't ideal. Not a lot of things are computerized; most of the design work is paper-based.

I am a proud company individual

    Licensing Engineer (Current Employee)
    Wadsworth, TX

ProsGood Nuclear Safety Culture and people overall work well together.

ConsRemote area for living...If you like hunting, fishing and small towns...its for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to build on our culture...work on improving our PI&R skills...and add more resources to minimize the knowledge transfer issues WE have due to the aging workforce.

    WE team at STP

    Mechanic (Current Employee)
    Bay City, TX

ProsThe employees and the "WE" team spirit of cooperation. The opportunities for advancement as we build two more nuclear plants adjacent to the two we currently safely operate.

ConsWork location is far from suitable housing and amenities.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore Management By Walking Around (MBWA) and less management by email.

    Very rewarding learning experience.

    Supply Chain Intern (Former Employee)

ProsTransparent business plan, excellent safety record, importance of employees, solid company culture. Management is very organized and willing to share information, answer questions, or address concerns. Very open to personal development and training opportunities.

ConsLocation is very rural. There is not much to do in the area but work and fish. If you are already settled down and like a slower pace it might be for you, but I wanted to live in a little bigger town. If you dont mind an hour commute you could live in Houston though.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would recommend trying to fit interns into the department within the company that best suits their skillsets, education, and experience. My job description, while good experience, was not what I had intended as a career.

    Not what I expected

    Intern (Current Employee)

ProsEveryone was really friendly with each other and new people were welcomed. Did not have a corporate cut throat environment which was nice.

ConsThe location of the company is in the middle of nowhere. The nearest chain restaurant is an hour a away.
