I worked at STP Nuclear as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Learning about the plant was awesome. I understand nuclear power plants (and how nuclear reactions work in general) at least 100 times better. Everyone around you is a genius, and people are friendly. There is a large focus on understanding the whole system, which is very important! Joining this company now will give you a chance to be part of the "great shift change" as the Navy Nukes who built the plant begin to retire. Strong support of military personnel. Lots of focus on employee training. You will also get to be a part of the culture shift back to the "WE" culture. I LOVE the CEO of STPNOC.

    Cons

Culture has a definite "old white guy" vibe. It's changing fast as they bring in newer and newer engineers. While the STP WE culture was prominent a couple decades ago, it needs some rebuilding. (There is more finger pointing than necessary) You are always competing with fossil fuels, right now it's Natural Gas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going, you're doing a great job. Get us back to "WE"

I worked at STP Nuclear as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly people, especially to new people like interns and new hires. System Engineers have a lot of responsibility. A great place for first time internship and full time if you like stability. People here are no-nonsense type and like to focus on work, but still pretty relaxed and pleasant to work with.

    Cons

They're pretty much in the middle of nowhere, just the facts of the nuclear industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, I haven't been there long enough to get a good feel for the problems in management.

I worked at STP Nuclear full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Teamwork, mutual respect, focus on safety; the company backs its employees.

    Cons

It's eight miles west of Wadsworth Texas on FM 521.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time

    Pros

Friendly workplace, good benefits, good 4x10 work schedule when not in an outage/turn around.

    Cons

Many work processes are still managed like its the 70's or 80's, a majority of workforce is set in their ways and work against change, development/training for engineers is mismanaged and lacking, mentorship and knowledge transfer is not properly fostered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tackle work force development as hard as the "Cost Savings Initiative". The next generation does not have a pension anchoring them down and will look for the opportunities if they arent available at STP.

I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company is reasonably well run, but not exceedingly so. Compensation is on par with employers in the field.

    Cons

There is a general feel that the new CEO (Koehl) is not in it for the long haul but rather to make his mark in cost cutting and leave. While we are not a publicly traded company, there is also the feel that quarterly or annual earnings and expenditures are driving decision making.

This coupled with the remote location and lack of amenities in the area make working here hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work harder to have personnel to understand the long term goals of the company and how they fit into it. Work better with the bargaining unit.

I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The coworkers are great, and the culture is good. My favorite part is only working four days a week, and the excitement of working in an operating facility.

    Cons

It is located in the middle of nowhere. The closest city of any size is Bay City, and the closest city with over 20K people is Lake Jackson. A lot of people commute, but with working 10 hours a day, adding an extra couple of hours for commuting isn't ideal. Not a lot of things are computerized; most of the design work is paper-based.

    Pros

Good Nuclear Safety Culture and people overall work well together.

    Cons

Remote area for living...If you like hunting, fishing and small towns...its for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to build on our culture...work on improving our PI&R skills...and add more resources to minimize the knowledge transfer issues WE have due to the aging workforce.

I have been working at STP Nuclear

    Pros

The employees and the "WE" team spirit of cooperation. The opportunities for advancement as we build two more nuclear plants adjacent to the two we currently safely operate.

    Cons

Work location is far from suitable housing and amenities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More Management By Walking Around (MBWA) and less management by email.
