Good People, Bad Work Environment

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at SUNTECH AMERICA

ProsPros:
It's a paycheck.
Very good health benefits.
Great people, very close-knit workers.

The people are what make this place.

ConsCons:
Extremely political upper management filters down into attitudes of operation-level workers.
Lack of job security.
Deliberately poor and evasive company communication.

Suntech has experienced enough shake-ups in the last year to make even a native Californian nervous. Just a look at the news shows heavy lay-offs, a scandal or two, and the removal of top-level management.

It all contributes to a strong 'abandon ship' mentality.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the company more about profitability and less about egos.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not worth your time

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at SUNTECH AMERICA

ProsGreat People that are passionate about what they do

ConsThere is no job security at Suntech at all. Very poor management! one minute they are hiring the next minute they are laying the same people off as if nobody checked their budget before these people came on board.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt doesnt make sense to hire people and offer them great salary when you know you are going to lay them off after a month or so...Job security is always better than a good salary especially during this recession.

Avoid, Unless Starving and Desperate

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at SUNTECH AMERICA full-time

ProsFree nuts in the kitchen.
Convenient location near mass transit.

ConsMisrepresentation of roles, responsibilities and upward mobility (good people often enticed to leave stable jobs relying on misrepresentations)
Inexperienced, arrogant CEO in China.
Vision for company seems to change every other month.
Inexperienced, incompetent and/or unstable management in many departments (not all, but most).
Complete lack of accountability of management.
Understaffed at every level.
Politics pervasive at every level.
Constant employee turnover.
Lack of job security.
Horrible employee morale here.
Quarterly (seriously) reviews for employees (except anyone in a management role, they have carte blanche).
Incredibly cheap (how about bringing in lunch for mandatory all-hands meetings once in a while?)

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house of most management and hire competent replacements.
Institute upward reviews (employees reviewing managers).
Stop quarterly reviews.
Hire enough people to do the work.
Value your employees.
Look behind you, your competitors have gained ground and it's only going to get worse.

A complete misrepresentation of the responsibilities and opportunity.

ProsA paycheck is the only benefit afforded.

Consalmost 90% employee turnover annually at all levels including senior most positions. A China parent with no interest in developing the Americas organization. it is simply a channel stuffing operation with no senior level ownership. Evenings and weekends are expected due to time differences with China parent and no consideration due to perception of Americas employees being overpaid compared to China based employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementClose the US subsidiary and sell through distributors. Consistency would be helpful. The concept of employee retention should not be dismissed simply because China interns are available as substitutes.

Was a great, entrepreneurial company but has deteriorated. Stay away if you have other options.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at SUNTECH AMERICA for more than 5 years

ProsIt's a job if you are desperate.
The world's largest manufacturer of solar panels, but number two is catching up fast and will be number one this year.

ConsVery political, incompetent management, financial instability, declining shareholder value, no innovation, do not value people. Not a long term move. US operation controlled by China and essentially a communist value system. There have been several rounds of layoffs and most everyone still there is looking for another job.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
