I worked at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

    Pros

Although downsized recently, the facility gave me a year's notice in order to seek a position within the organization, I was fortunate to get my employment extended for an additional six months in another department. HR was proactive in setting up workshops for resume writing and to upgrade computer skills. With several unions in place, pay increases were usually given annually as opposed to private industry.

    Cons

There was too much turmoil and changes in senior leadership which lead to uncertainty and fear in the workplace.
Lay offs were done too broadly based on titles as opposed to actual work requirements.

I have been working at SUNY Downstate Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Multicultural environment
    - Meet interesting people
    - Flexible hours (depends on the department and employer)
    - Can learn a lot if you take initiative
    - Helpful and friendly staff (many of them, at least)

    Cons

    - Not much room for advancement
    - Research quality is great in some labs and not so much in others
    - Not a lot of funding in the basic sciences

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please put as much focus (if not more) on the basic sciences as you do on the medical school.
It will benefit the entire establishment in the long run.
