    Pros

SUNY attracts passionate, appreciative students to its class rooms. The staff I have had the opportunity to worked with are also very supportive and creative.

    Cons

Unfortunately, as most are aware, working as an adjunct is challenging, awarding work, but the salary that is offered in many of the institutions are not commensurate to experience.

    Advice to Management

My advice to Chairs of departments would be to petition the boards of the colleges to recognize the significance of it part-time faculty and to find ways to increase the salaries of its adjuncts in the class room.

  2. Adjuncts will be fine as long as they don't get involved.

    Pros

85% of all students are there for the right reasons and work extremely hard. I stayed for them.
    Lovely setting.
Great coffee houses and very kind support staff.
The majority of the students absolutely make this one of the best places to work.
If you teach 2> classes, you will get a great benefit package.

    Cons

Tenured faculty are pretentious and rude.
Adjuncts are treated with little to no regard. They are disrespected by most.
Parking for an adjunct is a nightmare.
Pay is average for adjuncts (read the chronicle). Still not enough to live on. This is a side job, even with 3 classes.
The amount of time they ask for pales in comparison to what the students need.
Students feel abandoned by full time faculty unless they are solid A-B students. All others are ignored for the most part.
Department upheaval, petty back biting and insecurity leads to a "clicky" attitude amongst faculty.

    Advice to Management

Treat adjuncts with more respect. You're getting advance degree experts in their field. Treat them as the professionals that they are.

Blanket statements and sweeping promises are not a happy day to day environment. 5 other adjuncts that I met on campus couldn't wait to leave either.

The adjunct faculty could be your greatest asset, treat them as such.

    Pros

Once you get tenure (7 years) you basically have to commit a crime to be fired. Decent benefits (except vision). Lots of movement potential across the university.

    Cons

Surrounded by people with punch card mentality. Slow, grinding bureaucracy. Lots of micro-managers. Spineless union caves to governor every fiscal year and salary increases are non-existent. Completely different expectations depending on who you report to.

    Advice to Management

Retire and let some new blood take over.
