I have been working at SUPERVALU full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The location is great - right along the Boise River and quick access to the Greenbelt. It's also really close to downtown Boise. The work is challenging and provides a continually opportunity to learn new things.

    Cons

The pay does not seem to be competitive with years of expereience and other corporate offices in the area. The continual discussion of head count and benefit reduction is unmotivating and tiring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The IT department is at throws with itself. Policies being indoctrinated are to the point of harassment. Being and outstanding team member for over the past 7 years, the IT Support has gone from FANTASTIC on every level of work to dreading each and every shift. I was harassed for using the facility for 15 minutes, by someone I have known for years, and Finally said if you cannot trust your own employees, then whats the point. And fire me......Everyone is treated this way. I am a casualty to the policy and the power struggle of the managers. In the last 8 months IT has lost over 100 years of knowledge. Ask anyone I worked with and they know they lost one of the best.

    Pros

Exciting, challenging with great pay and wonderful colleagues. If you embrace change and with all it brings, you'll fit in well.

    Cons

Shrinking margins have forced org to significantly reduce staff and cut costs at every corner. Unfortunately, this results in less productivity, creativity and growth for all. Not a great strategy to hang your hat on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Settle in on a strategy and stick with it and remember that your people are you best assets.

I worked at SUPERVALU full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Supervalu is loyal to their employees in that they provide proper training, and have a "wellness" program with lower insurance premium incentives.

    Cons

Overall, Supervalu took on too much when they bought out grocery chains and tried to run both the distribution and retail side of groceries. Ultimately, they had to restructure which cause a lot of hard working folks to lose their jobs,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that they have restructured, hopefully, they will go back to the type of business in which they excel--management; stick to what you know.

I have been working at SUPERVALU full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with some great people at the supervisor level and below.
    Pay Rate is good.
    My commute is very short.

    Cons

The two major factors that SUPERVALU has to take care of is debt related to the merger of SUPERVALU and Albertsons and customer losses due to poor pricing and poor customer service. Instead of working on those items, the Senior management started building a new series of stores called Save A Lot, which added new expenses with the possibility of new income, but left the debt high and did nothing to build sales in existing stores.

Then the senior management team only looked at where to make costs in expenses, which often meant sending jobs to India and laying off their American workforce. Along with just gutting the company to the point that it is impossible to provide customer service above a poor level at all.

Only in the last six months has prices been worked on, yet that has not been rolled out across the company, instead the work has been on how we can sell parts of the company to pay down the debt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce management layers in the back offices, there is no reason to have so many VPs and directors.
Get in touch with competitor customers and find out what they like and what they do not like and use that information to rebuild your existing stores. At this point it maybe necessary to rename your stores in order to gain customers as you have left you name brand stores to be known for high prices and poor customer service.
