Pros
Many grocery banners throughout the U.S. & growing the Save A Lot business
Cons
Company continues to sell off lines of business to improve financial performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue the 8 Plays to Win to invest in price which will make us more competitive.
Pros
Nearly impossible to get fired (though not outsourced)
Decent compensation, though they keep cutting bonuses, etc.
Medical benefits are average or slightly below average
Some talented people, though most top talent in IT has left the company
Cons
Management above director level is mostly clueless about what people do.
Upper management is a revolving door. Expect a new CIO and CEO every few years with "new" strategies that they bring.
Lack of nearly any kind of standards
Management does not trust staff, tends to trust consultants more than employees.
Company suffers from much "analysis paralysis" and moves quite slowly.
Company generally has a penny-wise, pound foolish approach
Very little long-term thinking, strategies are very short-term and change often
Heavily offshoring as much IT as possible, future seems poor for onshore (US) IT staff
Morale quite low among workers, most just doing enough to get by
There are some bright people, but lots of average or below-average talent. Supervalu doesn't really attract top talent, and if they do they don't stay long due to reasons above.
Lots of legacy IT hardware and software that company will not spend money on to modernize.
Advice to Senior Management
Enable employees in practice. Standardize environments. Develop management that truly understands their area. Be honest with employees and they will reward you with loyalty.
Pros
- Good place to start your career to get the "corporate or office" experience
- Supervisors are generally ok with requesting time off
- You really can learn some things and get experience when you push for it
Cons
- The pay is low $13.50 and is hourly unless you get an Experienced position
- Most of the work is data entry and you are treated as if you are only a clerk
- Very difficult to move up, growth structure is limited.
- Benefits take 6 months before you are elgible
Advice to Senior Management
INVEST IN YOUR WILLING YOUNG EMPLOYEES!! The best employees leave as soon as they find their way out, others feel stuck. They need to get rid of the hourly and develop their talent.
Pros
Great learning opportunity for people new to automation
Cons
Third party employer at this location
Advice to Senior Management
Need more opern lines of communication. Building id is an entirely automated builded that was run by SuperValu for Target Distribution.
Pros
-pay
-full-time benefits
-WE environment (work at home)
Cons
So many to list......
-Incompetent managers
-Managers who aren't leaders
-Hostile culture
-No one works together
-Too many people doing the same duties/jobs (inefficient)
-Pay isn't good compared to other Fortune 500 companies
-Many people have sought professional counseling because the workplace culture was soooo bad!
Advice to Senior Management
I wouldn't offer it to the current leadership/management....they need new managers who are actually leaders. There are far too many middle managers who have trailed along the system for too many years and arent adding anything to helping the company change for the better. They are micromanaging because they are scared to lose their jobs, hogging up big paychecks, and waiting 5-6 years until they can cash out to retirement.
The only things I learned at SUPERVALU is what not to do when I am in management someday
SUPERVALU has a business transformation strategy, but its short term (get out of debt and sell the banners) its not long term.
GO ANYWHERE ELSE SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR SANITY!!!
Pros
Compensation and benefits are pretty standard. Good place to gain experience. The people are nice. Management is competent. Good intentions.
Cons
Working at Supervalu is a challenge not due to the nature of the work, but the amount of unnecessary work. When I was there from 2008 - 2010, there were many reports being produced but never being used. It was such a waste of time. On top of that, there were many new systems being implemented which didn't work well together. The implementation was very fast and poorly done, so there was always fixes being made. We had to put out a lot of fires all the time, nearly every day. Very stressful environment for the pay.
Pros
Store changes
Good Employees
Drug Free
Flexible hours
Very Laid Back
Cons
Lack of technology
Stressful environment
Not alot of good Benefits
No Grocery Discount
Advice to Senior Management
Don't put so much pressure on your employees and try to be at customer service most of the day. Also hire more people so maybe it won't be so stressful.
Pros
Good pay, and fairly easy work
Cons
Not much movement allowed within the company
Advice to Senior Management
need to help people move arround
Pros
Union benefits, 40 hour work week, good employee culture
Cons
Demanding, strenuous, stressful environment at times
Advice to Senior Management
Look beyond college degrees to promote successful store managers
Pros
-Passionate co-workers who want the company to succeed
-Advanced technology for the industry
-Good pay and benefits for management/FT associates
Cons
-Difficult environment for women in management (if promoted, not supported)
-Intimidation tactics not uncommon amongst certain leaders
-President(s) turnover
Advice to Senior Management
Review level of responsibility held at the local level. Lack of accountability strongly impacts all workers. Recognize the right people.
