Pros
The internship wasn't highly structured like some companies - meaning that if you wanted to learn more about the company, meet people, and get noticed -- you actually had to work at it. In my opinion this is a good thing - it reflects the "real world". A lot of internships are task based, but if you do a great job at that task you definitely have the opportunity to expand your horizons. (communicate goals early on with your manager)
Great company to intern at, unless you feel the need to have your hand held. If you want to have your hand held go work for Cargill, CH Robinson etc.... but you will be waiting in line for promotions if you are hired behind the 30 other people hired the year you were.
Cons
-Older workforce, can be difficult to come into as a young person.
-Slightly boring culture depending on the group you are with.
Advice to Senior Management
-Corporate departments are extremely separated, seems like nobody talks to each other. Lots of opportunities for improvements if departments communicated more.
-Tons of manual work and reliance of Excel... again - lots of opportunities for improvements. Needs to be an IT consultative department/business function.
Pros
Easy work, days go by fast
Cons
Slow to adapt change, too much doing things the way they have always been done.
Pros
Stable industry. Opportunities for advancement and growth. Have workplace empowerment
Cons
Very Price competitive industry. Low margins high debt.
Advice to Senior Management
Always keep in touch with the troops on the ground. Take upward feedback, and acknowlege successes.
Pros
-pay
-full-time benefits
-WE environment (work at home)
Cons
So many to list......
-Incompetent managers
-Managers who aren't leaders
-Hostile culture
-No one works together
-Too many people doing the same duties/jobs (inefficient)
-Pay isn't good compared to other Fortune 500 companies
-Many people have sought professional counseling because the workplace culture was soooo bad!
Advice to Senior Management
I wouldn't offer it to the current leadership/management....they need new managers who are actually leaders. There are far too many middle managers who have trailed along the system for too many years and arent adding anything to helping the company change for the better. They are micromanaging because they are scared to lose their jobs, hogging up big paychecks, and waiting 5-6 years until they can cash out to retirement.
The only things I learned at SUPERVALU is what not to do when I am in management someday
SUPERVALU has a business transformation strategy, but its short term (get out of debt and sell the banners) its not long term.
GO ANYWHERE ELSE SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR SANITY!!!
Pros
Compensation and benefits are pretty standard. Good place to gain experience. The people are nice. Management is competent. Good intentions.
Cons
Working at Supervalu is a challenge not due to the nature of the work, but the amount of unnecessary work. When I was there from 2008 - 2010, there were many reports being produced but never being used. It was such a waste of time. On top of that, there were many new systems being implemented which didn't work well together. The implementation was very fast and poorly done, so there was always fixes being made. We had to put out a lot of fires all the time, nearly every day. Very stressful environment for the pay.
Pros
Good pay, and fairly easy work
Cons
Not much movement allowed within the company
Advice to Senior Management
need to help people move arround
Pros
- Good benefits
- Opportunity for growth
Cons
- Employers care more for company than employees
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees more like people than numbers.
Pros
It seemed like diversity was encouraged and it was fun to participate in some of the employee resource groups. The intern program was not as developed as some of the programs at other companies I have worked for though.
Cons
As an intern, instead of working on your own project or in a team of peers you join a group of senior analysts so I ended up doing some side work for them most of the time instead of actually getting exposure to project management or being actively engaged in the product development lifecycle planning.
Advice to Senior Management
Work on developing the internship program more to have a more structured and challenging experience. Give interns a chance to get more involved with project planning and managing teams.
Pros
- 401K Benefits
- Free Tea/Coffee
- Onsite Gym
- Continuous, unpredictable change is adventurous & fun
- Financially sound
Cons
- It's all about how you manage-up
- Blame game all over
- too many levels & hierarchy
- lots of responsibility & accountability at lower levels without empowerment or clear definition of roles
Advice to Senior Management
Employees should be part of the strategy for the company to turnaround
Pros
The benefits are decent. The people are great.
Cons
Lack of direction
Lack of focus
Lack of decision making
Low comparative compensation
Advice to Senior Management
Get informed, decide, Act.
