It's a govt contractor, so you have to put up with red tape, but they stay grounded and are a good solid company.

    Great company to work for

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Small enough company where you get to know pretty much everyone. Yearly reviews and everyone has a chance to contribute. You can also just do your job and what is asked of you. Management usually looks for its employees to go above and beyond their job responsibilities when it comes time to do annual reviews.

    Cons

Ups and downs with sequestration which can strain work opportunities and cause for boring days at work. Growth has slowed over the years and the culture has changed a bit from what it used to be.

Current Employee - Senior Staff Engineer  in  East Syracuse, NY
Current Employee - Senior Staff Engineer in East Syracuse, NY

    Pros

Great compensation, work/life balance, well respected company, very meaningful job, and nice people.
Tries to value innovation and reward talents - at least back on the right track.
Bought by SAAB AB in 2011- went from a small unstable company to be part of a well-respected global company.
Central NY is a great place to raise young kids - great public schools (FM, JD) and very reasonable housing cost

    Cons

Depends too much on government contracts - concerns w. sequester coming.
Not a highly profitable business - means no bonus.
Attracts mostly local talents - hard to attract top notch.
Senior and mid management are still on the weak side - lack of experience in general and perceived as lacking accountability - not to bad if you are afraid to make mistakes...
Syracuse winter means lots of snow - not too bad if you like to ski...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to attract top talents and invest more in R&D & new product development - give more budget freedom to senior tech leaders but hold them accountable for new capability development.
Start giving bonus / awards to top performers.
Train right engineers to do effective BD and train your engineers to self manage or be efficient managers (or the other way around if you dare) - a more flexible work force can better coast through downs such as sequester with good stability.
Need to train your managers better, enforce best practice - invest in good tools (not laughable costly ones), streamlined leaner-overhead processes, transparency, accountability reflected in compensation review process, and retool your managers - retire BB for example.
    Keep those great benefits going!

The companies technology makes it safer to fly and the business would be more viable with stronger product management

Former Employee - Project Manager  in  Syracuse, NY
Former Employee - Project Manager in Syracuse, NY

    Pros

Team of people are talented technically, and solutions for making air travel safer are the best in the world (most installations at world's 100 busiest airports).

    Cons

The positives said about technical talent are countered by the lack of business savy talent. While there are several strong business leaders there are not enough people with business talent. Additionally tuition reimbursement frozen and talent voluntarily leaving before the new owners Saab and also under the new owners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

put in place stronger strategy and product management; turn back on tuition reimbursement to keep talent

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in East Syracuse, NY

    Pros

Above average benefits, average pay, nice building with cafeteria and gym, easy flex time and decent amount of vacation. Most of the people are very friendly. Is an OK atmosphere when there is plenty of work.

    Cons

Not a great place for less experienced engineers since there is no mentorship, there are few people who are willing to help you grow and get the right opportunities. Very difficult to move around jobs, tend to chase charge numbers all the time. Getting on jobs requires a lot of informal networking, so hopefully you have a lot of friends. A lot of good work goes on, which goes unnoticed or rewarded by management. Management changes the mission of the company on a daily basis, can't seem to stay focused.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no good reward system for engineers, and less experienced engineers are overlooked. Fire all your BD guys, if they don't bring contracts in with REAL money then they're not doing a good enough job. Don't attack 10 opportunities and hope for 1. Focus on a few projects, do them on time, with superior quality, and don't promise things you can't deliver. Management always babels about waste and inefficiency, but BD is the biggest waste of all.
