Pros
The benefits through the union are the best reason to work at Safeway. The good employee's far outway the bad.
Cons
Management, both store level and up, is hit and miss. Some know what they're doing and others you can run circles around. Corporate has the stores operate in an ideal scenario rather then what the world is actually like. Everyone is overworked and unde rappreciated, yet expected to work with reduced hours.
Pros
If you need a job to kill time, or just to make extra money than it's perfect. Most of the employees are pretty nice.
Cons
They expect you to do so much more than what they pay. I've literally had to scrape the floor OUTSIDE of starbucks in a different department. Why couldn't that departments employees do it? I have other duties to do in my department that they expect done. The customers are the most stuck up people i've ever met. Every single day at work I have to deal with a customer who isn't happy with the bathrooms & when I can't fix it, I get sh*t for it. Ridiculous.
Advice to Senior Management
2 words: HIGHER PAY. Thats it. People wouldn't be so disgruntled if you actually listened to them and their reasons. I'm tired of being used.
Pros
Work-life balance, wellness programs, and nice co-workers.
Cons
A highly political, top-down culture. Open communication, courage and integrity are given lip-service by at least some in upper-management.
Advice to Senior Management
Guard against self-serving smile-up, kick-down leaders and a cover-your-rear culture. Promote true leadership and risk-taking.
Pros
health benefits after working a certain amount of time, flexible hours, new stores
Cons
crazy union dues (as a checker I pay $47 per month(
Advice to Senior Management
you all started out where your employees are now. Show a little appreciation and respect.
Pros
employee discount, comardorie, decent salary, work/life balance, flex work schedule, good training, good equipment to work with, easy access location
Cons
no bonus or salary increases in years. lack of top down communication on company concerns/issues, IT support is lousy, must wear shirt and tie at HQ
Pros
u get paid weekly and flexible schedule and u also get to have a union just incase theres an accident or theres something about safeway u dont like for example noot being fair with work hours
Cons
pushing carts and sometimes having to work late shifts and not being able to move up to be a cashier right away because u have to work at a different department for awhile
Advice to Senior Management
the leadership as safeway is awesome they are relly great
Pros
Great people, respected company, diverse workforce, community giveback, and the opportunity to learn and work in different parts of the company
Cons
Formal dress code and 8 to 5 environment, silo driven, reactive strategy, below par salary, uneven workload from one department to another, titles and salary are not evenly matching up to job responsibilities.
Advice to Senior Management
Stay open minded to gradually change the culture to reflect the social change of the 21st century workforce and also invest in future leaders, technologies, system to become the leader of the industry which will help attract investors, employees, and customers.
Pros
The management is very nice and flexible when it comes to school and work. They are black and white when it comes to rules and performance. There isn't a grey area to them, but they don't try and make you feel bad about any mistakes in stead, they let you know why it is important to do the things you do right the first time. I worked with some companies before where management can have their head up their asses, but the ones I am working with, have done time with the company and understand the daily stresses that come with life and will work with anyone that needs the help.
Cons
The pay is pretty low compared to some other companies. The hours can be a bit long, going to midnight shifts.
Pros
It's a good place to learn and potentially grow. Good for recent college grads.
Cons
Advancement opportuntities and taking risk
Advice to Senior Management
It would be good if people could think of new ideas
Pros
They would hire you on the spot. I got hired at a job fair they had in the store and then I was coming in to work as a courtesy clerk for a while when I was in Art School but they wanted to hire me into Floral instead where I had no experience whatsoever in that field.
Cons
When I got that position I did not receive any training and had no clue about the plants. They lied after working a week in Floral and said they were cutting hours in Floral and put me on the front end for a week for 17 hours all shifts until midnight. Next thing I knew I checked the schedule and I was not on there and had to come in and talk to the manager myself and they said I didn't make the grade in Floral so they had to let me go. It was because I had no knowledge about plants in order to help the customers. They said they could offer me a position in the front end but I never heard back , filed for unemployment and had to start my job search again. It was enough to shake me up since I was never fired from a job prior to that.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't hire people in the first place if they have none or lack of experience in that particular department or hire within. Communicate with the associates about why they are taken off the schedule rather than leaving them in the dark.
