I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible with time (if exempt) for family emergencies and life/work balance. Stable environment in departments. Longevity is encouraged. Internal hiring is the norm along with promotions. Salary is comparative to market for backstage employees.

    Cons

If the boss is a bully HR will do nothing about it unless you contact someone very high up in the company. Favoritism rules internal hiring and promotions. The office culture is separatist where managers cling to their positions while pushing subordinates away from their knowledge and expertise instead of embracing it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I hope with the CEO continues his trend of making the environment warm and welcoming, as he started when he took over. Management could use an good I/O psychologist consultant to train them in how to positively influence people, instead of the normative transactional management approach.

I worked at Safeway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Everyone is supportive and driven, there are few surprises if any. A good 8-5 job rarely requiring any overtime, good work life balance.

    Cons

Not many young people and few perks. Feels like an old and aging company. Not willing to really invest in employees.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Historically, Safeway has had a stable environment in which one can work for a long time in the private label group as a brand manager (unlike in a CPG firm where you either are promoted or worked out over time). It also is an environment in which you can see a lot, as there is not the same scrutiny from many layers of management as at a CPG firm. Also, while Safeway is conservative, you can be sure it is not going to do anything unsavory. That I did appreciate.

    Cons

It is a pretty conservative environment and not the most exciting. Many people in the grocery industry stay in it for their entire careers, so the setting is not always that dynamic or forward thinking.

Note that at the time of this writing Safeway has been slated to be acquired by the same company that owns Albertsons. This will be finalized at the beginning of the year 1/1/15. Time will tell if this is good or bad, but in the short run it is probably not good, as much will be in a state of chaos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow employees to be more flexible and innovative. The grocery industry is under extreme pressure and needs to innovate or it will die.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Talented hardworking people. Good benefits. Recently (this year) men no longer are required to wear ties and employees are now allowed to wear jeans on Friday. This is something the former CEO would never have allowed. Awesome company fitness center.

    Cons

Very long hours. Constant threat of being laid off if you cannot perform is exremely stressful. Very talented people are choosing to leave in light of the pending merger. Future employment status very fragile and uncertain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management out of touch with reality of what employeess are dealing with.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I work for a great team and manager that encourages collaboration and teamwork. I've also build some really great professional and personal relationships at work.

    Cons

Company culture is conservative, but I have seen improvements in the work environment at the Corporate offices. Career opportunities are very limited, depending on the team/department you're in.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There are some really good people at Safeway. There is a good work/life balance. They have a great fitness center. They recently relaxed the dress code to include jeans. The opportunity to grow is about average. A lot of what you will experience is dependent on what department you work in.

    Cons

There are also some really old school, power hungry people that can make your life miserable. The healthcare policies are way to invasive and personal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open with your employees and try not to tell them how to run their personal lives.
