I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Culture and the people make it an awesome time working here. Cross functional team work is good. Learning and expanding your experience between departments (lattice moves) are available and does help build your knowledge base.

    Cons

Work load can be heavy. Despite several departments, there definitely is one department that is known to be the highlight above all else. Lot's of red tape that keeps one from doing their job functions. Too many chiefs causing friction which bogs down production levels and work flow processes. Despite lattice moves being an option, this can cause some backlash.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fully understand and dissect the job functions for each level. Over delegating and too many directives can and will cause overlaps. Information overload can prevent staff from getting the job done and or keep the focus away from the bottom line.

I have been working at Safeway

    Pros

Work life balance; private gym with state of the art equipment and group fitness classes

    Cons

Too many management levels; archaic business systems that cannot interface with newer systems - double work!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend the money to upgrade important systems so they interface with each other instead of being inefficient and using band aiding approach to get things done.

I have been working at Safeway full-time

    Pros

Good work-life balance, managers have not micro-managed. Co-workers are very easy to get along with and there are some decent perks like the cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

There is a lot of uncertainty with the merger and the pay is just okay. Too much red-tape to get any real change made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make everything about the merger transparent and don't keep your employees in the dark.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay is competitive in the retail industry, however raises and promotions are hard to come by. The benefits are great, and the company provides its employees with free courses to further their skills in certain areas. Overall Safeway is a positive place work.

    Cons

Raises and promotions are hard to come by without having years and years of experience in a certain area. Work/life balance could be better if they hired more people to run a department instead of such tight headcounts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers must organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Safeway has being known for being a great place to work. They offer career growth, networking and volunteering opportunities. The people are friendly and you can easily get acclimmated to the culture of feeling connected. I like how they organize various health and career development presentations and speakers. Including on to how prevent certain illnesses, care for yourself or a loved one. My personal experience has been that there's a good sense of life and work balance.

    Cons

Currently, Safeway is in the process of being acquired. There wil be changes but alot of it is still unknown. Such as the company structure, which positions will change or be eliminated and what the culture will be like. We should have more information by end of 4th quarter.
