Former Employee – worked at Safeway full-time for more than a year
Pros – If you are serious about becoming a manager or excelling in some other fashion, don't be afraid to voice it. Demand it and prove you are both capable and deserve it. This is what I did and at 18 years old I was the youngest department manager there.
Cons – Many workers at Safeway have been there a very long time and have become absorbed to the point where Safeway is there life. They live for drama and seek any ups and downs to live through. It was hard to balance the delicate line of being social and keeping to myself. I don't like to be involved in drama but its hard to do when you socialize and become friendly.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Benefits
Vacation
Sick leave
4 floating holidays
Promote from within
Cons – Micro-managed a lot
Too many bosses to report to that are not on the same page
Think like an owner, but follow our cookie cutter way.
Way too many audits, that management cares about results eventhough they know it doesn't benefit company or customers
Advice to Senior Management – Let the department managers have more freedom on how to merchandise thier own departments. Different store areas=different types of customers, every plan will not work in every store.

Current Employee – been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – since you stay busy an 8 hour shift goes by fast. your treated like family.most positions pay well.
Cons – dont go to work tired as it is labor in the department you will fall behind, guaranteed.people at safeway are a bit more proud because of the name of where they work , high end store ,so there is the atmosphere of up-ity-ness but then their right were safeway not walmart but i know alot of people are just not comfortable with that mind set.
Advice to Senior Management – be a bit more personable with your employees displaying a level of knowledge about daily life of your workers and what we really do to get the job done boosts morale .morale is a deal maker or breaker.validated employees are happy employees and happy employees produce consistant ,high quality work that safeway and its customers have come to expect..

Current Employee – been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Everybody needs to eat so there is good job stability. Salary and Benefit package is competitive.
Cons – Minimum 10 hour days. Could be 15 or more hours depending on what happens in the day. Weekends, holidays, evenings are all on the table. Leads to not spending a whole lot of time with your family.
Advice to Senior Management – The company is top-heavy. Trim some of the fat and focus on the stores and the customer experience. Many times we spend more time playing our own internal "games" than we do on helping the customers.

Current Employee – been working at Safeway part-time for more than a year
Pros – Good health benefits, easy advancement, okay pay, works around hours.
Cons – Pay could be better, managers often try to guilt trip you, brainwashing, can get stuck, treated poorly.

Current Employee – been working at Safeway part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Flexible schedule for college students
Pay is good...eventually
Very easy job, 4-8 hours on autopilot
Union makes it impossible for anyone with half of a brain to get fired
Bonus pay on Sunday, paid vacations
Cons – Schedules are apparently decided with a blindfold and a dartboard
Boring, tedious work that will challenge you in no way
Secret shopping program can be hard until you figure out exactly what you are supposed to parrot
Dress code is still archaic
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Current Employee – been working at Safeway full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Most of the higher executives are great to work for, however most of the middle management employees are sometimes difficult, especially Store Managers who think their store is their "Kingdom" and won't accept suggestions.
Cons – Safeway expects a LOT from their salaried employees, and most are on call 7 days a week. The bonus system leaves a lot to be desired. There are too many factors above you that have to make their numbers before you can make your bonus no matter how hard you have worked all year to increase your own department numbers. Also, departments are not given the tools to do their job effectively, nor the hours.
Advice to Senior Management – Ask your District Managers to give the same support to ALL departments, and visit employees in those departments and give some encouragement.
