I worked at Safeway part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The store was clean, some of my coworkers were nice

    Cons

Horrible management, I got no breaks, overworked, accusatory management, management changed every month, forced out of my job for something I didn't do, lied to, manipulated, hostile environment, management cares more about saving their own butts than listening to the truth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about your employees, offer more raises, give employees breaks!, listen to employees!

I worked at Safeway part-time for less than a year

    Pros

There were some regular customers who were great, and many of the lower level employees are very good to work with.

    Cons

This was the worst job I have ever had. At the time I was a college student and this was supposed to be a part time job(20-25 hours a week). But i ended up working 35-45 hours and I was getting called in class almost daily to come cover for someone else. Most of the customers were snotty and rude about how the store was run, and how long it took to get their drinks even though I was the only one working and obviously couldn't make 20+ drinks for people within 5 minutes, and obviously had no control over how the store was run. This location frequently had homeless people come in, most of them were fine, but some would harass the customers and employees and I was told my management that the only thing I could do about it was leave the Starbuck's area, walk over to the front desk, and tell the manger that there was a problem and they would call the police. The management of the whole store was terrible, and many of the employees were absolutely miserable there. At the starbucks within the store we had 4 people quit within 2 months because they were so dissatisfied with the management. I eventually had to quit because a manger called me right before one of my finals(which I had requested off a month earlier) and told me if I didn't come in I would be fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your stuff together! People were miserable there because they were treated very poorly and their needs weren't taken into account.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Many good people work at Safeway.

    Cons

I have absolutely no faith in the senior leadership. The company is top heavy with "VP's" who have great salaries and perks. The benefits and salaries for all others are horrible. There is no diversity at Safeway and more importantly they don't value diversity of thought. Deserving people are routinely passed over for promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Gut management and start again

I worked at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay was good, excellent health benefits, time and a half for working on Sundays.

    Cons

Management was not consistent. From store to store. Safeway bought our company in 1998, which was the beginning of the end for us. 15 years later our division of Safeway was closed down for good. Terrible upper management, never could figure out our market, they thought the knew all the answers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need grocers to run your company, not accountants.
