    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

I had an open-minded manager who allowed me to do my job in my way without micromanaging me. More experienced people were always ready to help with an advise and direction. Great company to work for.

    Cons

Sometimes the management was unclear with their goals.

I have been working at Safeway

    Pros

Work life balance; private gym with state of the art equipment and group fitness classes

    Cons

Too many management levels; archaic business systems that cannot interface with newer systems - double work!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend the money to upgrade important systems so they interface with each other instead of being inefficient and using band aiding approach to get things done.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

In Davis CA, the wages were above the minimum wage for a Courtesy Clerk position. They have an organized and streamlined ethical work process. Great chance of promotion based on job performance and merit.

    Cons

Often times managers in the area are traded to other branches, and there is no sense of manager and employee relationship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management tends to be busy 24/7, and applicants are almost always faced with rude terse responses if they walk in. There is no rhyme or reason to who is hired, just chance events. I advise that Management scouts customer service talent and charisma rather than trying to force it out of new employees.

    Pros

Room for movement. You can cross train in different areas.

    Cons

Hours are awarded by seniority. Middle management is given too much control.

    Decent place to work

I have been working at Safeway full-time

    Pros

Good work-life balance, managers have not micro-managed. Co-workers are very easy to get along with and there are some decent perks like the cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

There is a lot of uncertainty with the merger and the pay is just okay. Too much red-tape to get any real change made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make everything about the merger transparent and don't keep your employees in the dark.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay is competitive in the retail industry, however raises and promotions are hard to come by. The benefits are great, and the company provides its employees with free courses to further their skills in certain areas. Overall Safeway is a positive place work.

    Cons

Raises and promotions are hard to come by without having years and years of experience in a certain area. Work/life balance could be better if they hired more people to run a department instead of such tight headcounts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers must organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results.

    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

Excellent health benefits, regular pay increases based on union pay scale. Opportunity to learn new job skills, able to develop interpersonal skills while working with a diverse group of employees and customers.

    Cons

Lack of regular schedule, it took over 20 years to finally get a position that allowed two consecutive days off or early shifts. Not enough time to complete job in almost every department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more hours back into the stores, allow employees who excel at their jobs to move up the pay scale faster.
