I have been working at Safeway full-time

    Pros

I like the people, overall. And the sense of community. And the work-life balance. And working in the Canyon Way building is the best. Also, they have a gym for employees, with regular exercise classes. A lot of positive to say about the environment, overall.

    Cons

A bit culturally conservative for the Bay Area. Still business casual attire required for office workers. Leadership doesn't do a lot of leading, and hasn't communicated well around the merger. The worst I can say about the company is the health benefits: Safeway doesn't pay enough of it, and the benefits are really complicated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more! Offer better health plans. And contribute to 401k plans.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

They will pay you accordingly. Work life balance depends on store location. Bonus opportunities depend on store location as well.

    Cons

You will have to earn every penny. Unrealistic expectations. Some days will leave you wanting to pull your hair out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to requests from associates. Too cut throat. Take the time to remember where you came from. Sales, sales, sales aren't all that matter.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are good and even part time employees can receive them. Also vacation and paid time off is nice. If willing to work in several departments and come in when they need you, you can get 40 to even over time.

    Cons

You have to work a certain amount of hours in order to receive a decent raise. Even if you take on more responsibilities. Plus in order to get hours you have to deal with a crazy schedule. I've been scheduled to be at work until 8pm and then expected to be back by 3 am on several occasions. and barely ever do you have 2 days off in a row.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you have employees willing to go work hard and willing to help where they're needed try and occasionally make sure they can have some time to be home and relax, and they get at least 8 hours of sleep!

Be prepared to schmooze with leadership if you want to get ahead, don't worry about actually having skills for the job.

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There is an on campus cafeteria (food is decent there), there is a company sponsored retirement plan, great location in Pleasanton, on site fitness center, and on site health center.

    Cons

Salary compensation is not very competitive unless you're an external hire, promotions are based on who you know within the company (forget about getting an interview for an internal posting unless you had personally reached out to senior leadership in that department, regardless of skills and qualifications), certain long time employees (think 20+ years at the company) look down upon other newer employees, and the good ol' boy culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look beyond who you're "buddies" with for promotions and focus on the skills of the applicants. Focus on rewarding skilled internal employees with competitive compensation rather than just attracting external hires with the competitive pay. You wouldn't need to look for skilled externals in the first place if you didn't lose skilled internals from poor compensation!

    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

Loved my team, manager, etc. good work/life balance. Meaningful work.

    Cons

Convinving upper management to believe in data and testing. Merger has resulted in c-suite execs who are mainly old, Caucasian men. Company culture will most likely get worse in the next few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Add diversity among upper management to gain different perspectives.

    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

Everyone was very nice and helpful toward the interns. The food is good in the cafeteria. My co-workers answered all my questions when I needed their help.

    Cons

The training was very informal and unguided so it was on you to figure out what resources you needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When hiring interns a specific project or list of project ideas would be nice to hear about. Having maybe a midsummer performance overview would be nice as well.

    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

The people are pretty nice to work with and the customers can be great. It's pretty busy because it's the only grocery store until Newport. It's pretty easy to get promoted. You get paid every week.

    Cons

The management is poor and uninvolved though they take a lot of credit for themselves at corporate. The pay is usually minimum wage.
