I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Okay hours 40 per week, pretty good benefits and vacation. Working environment is nice.

    Cons

As jn a lot of corporate pharmacy jobs (big box) we are under fire to trim workstaff each week according to script count. This has a direct effect on customer service and overall attitude of the staff (stress).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate pharmacy needs to take into consideration that there is more to staffing than rx count; that there is time that is taken with each customer, insurance company phone calls on behalf of those customers, inventory control, and other pharmacy duties that are not contributing directly to the bottom line, but are just as important. Good customer service, patient satisfaction and ultimately repeat business requires that pharmacy personnel give undivided attention to customers' individual needs, something that lacks when shorthanded.

    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

Compensation was reasonable to very good. The gym and exercise classes were a great addition to their focus on caring for employee health and overall well being.

    Cons

The lack of consistency among teams and departments was disappointing. Bringing attention to it unfortunately did not result in positive change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please spend more time being aware of who is really putting in the time working, and who is taking advantage of the fact that there is a lack of supervision in some areas.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good place to work for entry level positions, for young people to learn about the working world and obtain job experience. Good managers develop staff and employees improve skills. Good manager uses shifts to support staff.

    Cons

Upper management changes frequently (every 3-4 months) which disrupts rhythm of store and staff assignments. Commitments made by one manager not honored by incoming manager. Some managers very good; others very unprofessional and create hostile work environment. Moving one person from job in which they are very satisfied to another position/department because another employee cannot get along with direct supervisor not maximizing employee satisfaction across store. Work-life balance suffers from shift work and poor management scheduling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers, especially junior or assistant store managers would benefit from training that would help them work with staff. Threatening people not best way to improve job performance. Positive reinforcement and incentives would be better. Employees afraid to seek support from union for fear of retribution.

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The compensation was adequate. The use of the company gym was nice. It was nice to receive sample product.

    Cons

The company as whole did not promote fairly. The leadership was based on friends promoting friends, and friends of family. Certain people were held to different standards if you were part of the "Clique". A lot of stress was placed on individuals to make deadlines that were not possible. You will have to make sure that you do not make any level of managers upset because they will label you as "trouble maker" and they will use others to harass you and HR will not support you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not allow various levels of Managers who do not have formal education penalize those who have formal education. Do not allow the various managers to bully, harass, and intimidate workers who are not part of the "Clique". Please do not beat workers down with name calling and threats.

The company needs to focus less on sales and more on their employees and reward all they do.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great people, helping lot's of people who need it, working hard.

    Cons

wasn't really sure what i was doing for a week because i was moved around a lot. Started only getting one day a week, thats not enough to pay bills and rent. I applied for a Deli position and they hired me telling me they would wait for a spot to open for me in the deli. Not enough hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more hours so people can at least have enough to pay there bills..
