I worked at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay was good, excellent health benefits, time and a half for working on Sundays.

    Cons

Management was not consistent. From store to store. Safeway bought our company in 1998, which was the beginning of the end for us. 15 years later our division of Safeway was closed down for good. Terrible upper management, never could figure out our market, they thought the knew all the answers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need grocers to run your company, not accountants.

I have been working at Safeway part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Employees are nice. If you're an hourly employee you get paid every week. 10% discount on Safeway brands. Once you join the union after a 90 day probationary period you get pay raises every 400 hours. The job itself isn't too taxing.

    Cons

Managers don't know labor law. They expect you to forego meal breaks and retaliate when you file wage claims. Customers are rude and stupid. Barely enough hours to survive. No benefits until 9 months after you join the union.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn the laws. Consider giving the employees more stable schedules.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits, great friends and customers!

    Cons

Management is trained to lead you into failure instead of success. Makes me sad for all the loyal, hard working employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring a voice back to your employees and bring back manager reviews. Let the employees inform corporate of what go's on in stores on a daily basis without fear of retribution.

It is a hard company to work for, they require a lot of personal effort to do well, but the compensation is good.

I worked at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

For retail, they pay their store managers pretty well and their is opportunity to move up fast in the ranks. Do not expect to have a good work/ personal life balance.

    Cons

Require massive amounts of hours, the company will show no loyalty to anyone. The most important part of the business is get the job done

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expect to work long and hard hours.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

If you are luck enough to get a department you will get full time hours. However, You'll becoming in the middle of the night most of the time.

    Cons

It is a soul sucking way to live and work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hours can't be squeezed to nothing then question why the store seems to be running less efficiently.

I have been working at Safeway part-time for more than a year

    Pros

-it's union so every employee gets benefits even if your not full time.
    -some flexibility
    -

    Cons

    -management at my store awful.
    -always trying to intimidate employees
-cutting back on hours but giving more work to employers , meanwhile management gets bonuses for saving the company money by cutting back on hours.
-not being realistic that employees are people , not robots

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop having a boss superiority complex and start trying to understand how to deal with your employees with out intimidation , and outrages expectations...also know as the golden rule "treat others as you would like to be treated".

    Get to meet great people

    Cons

11 hours day with very very very few lunches and breaks. You will spend 6 to 8 hour in the check stand and run the store from the checkstand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thats why you are losing good employees
