I worked at Safeway full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work life balance, people are nice, defined process and i like the diversity

    Cons

After the acquisition everything changed, no direction on what the new "safeway" and how that will impact the people

    Pros

It was a good call center for the most part. Better than average.

    Cons

When I went to work there the Safeway/Cerebrus merger was already in the works. After working in the call center for 11 months, they decided to "lay off" a large percentage of the people. Didn't have any warning. They just told a bunch of the call center staff that we were laid off after strictly coaching us to make the "merger" to sound like it was a terrific opportunity for shoppers and employees.

    Advice to Management

Let us know more about what is available to us and what they think is going to happen to employees.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

most customers are great. Busy fast pace work.

    Cons

Lack of communication between managers and crew. The people who do all the work don't get the recognition they deserve and the ones who should be fired for not putting in any effort get to skate through the shift.

    Advice to Management

Work on your communication from the top down.

    Pros

Depending on the department there is a great atmosphere and guidance for growth. Management is supportive with new ideas and suggestion (depending on BU)

    Cons

Some Business Units are dead ends. Super competitive and cutthroat (management included). Pay is not competitive, healthcare is getting worse and worse and things seem only to be getting worse.

    Advice to Management

everyone is overworked and burnt, if they aren't then they've checked out. Bring back themed events like in previous years and engage your employees.

    Pros

    Great co-workers (loved my team)
    Diverse age of employees
    Flexible work hours

    Cons

    Very old-school, conservative environment
    No contribution/match for 401k
Upper management only look out for themselves
    Slim to none career growth

    Advice to Management

Management should really appreciate their employees, as they are the ones doing the nitty gritty work at the end of day. They should also take time to consider everyone's strengths and goals so they can hire/promote the right people. Maybe then they wouldn't be scrambling to keep or re-hire people that they recently laid off.

    Pros

Company just switched over to albertsons management.. Seems like prices rised and quality went down. They will hire anyone with a pulse to manage their stores, way to many politics

    Cons

Management is overworked for the pay.. The jump from 1st assistant to store manager is entirely to big, they need to pay their assistants more and they will get quality management

    Advice to Management

Get paid more and you will get quality people. Period end of discussion. Safeway was a good company in the 90's but other than that they have gone down hill

    Pros

Not a difficult job, 40hrs a week. Consistent work and job will not vary much from day to day. Company has opportunity for career advancement to management positions and beyond. Was considered for management position after 2 months time.

    Cons

Tedious work, incompetent co-workers often making the job more difficult than it needs to be. Poorly stacked pallets received from Safeway warehouse (paper towel underneath gallons of juice, etc.). Hard on the knees/back

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees availability and schedule them accordingly if you expect people to stick around. Dont have people working night shift scheduled to come in next day for a checker shift

    Pros

Good for Albertsons/Cerrabus to own more retail grocery.

    Cons

Same old grocery retail people in place. It's unfortunate they don't want a new look or opinion from anyone new. They keep the old guard in place and promote them.

    Advice to Management

Not much, they won't accept opinions
