Former Employee – worked at Sage North America full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – - Good benefits and a decent salary
- You can be a mediocre employee and stay here forever if you like (is that a pro?), unless you get caught in one of the mindless re-org headcount reductions
- People are generally nice and the work environment is quite roomy
Cons – - The project I was working on was launched into with little forethought and predictably crashed and burned after 4+ years of blowing what must have been massive amounts of money on reinventing the wheel and ending up with junk software
- Technical management has been around forever and have no idea what is current in the software world and don't seem inclined to learn. A toolkit was chosen that almost no one used and had very little support. Why? Who knows, maybe they thought it sounded cool.
- Anybody even a single step above the line managers does not pay any attention to what the employees are saying.
- Be prepared to be caught in endless meetings about how to improve process, development standards, deployment standards, design ideas, etc. A lot of talking happens but not much is accomplished.
- In general, this is a company stuck in a mindset of 25 years ago and they don't know how to fix it. I predict a slow but inevitable collapse unless things change significantly.
Advice to Senior Management – For god's sake listen to your front line employees. There were legitimately brilliant senior developers on the teams I was a part of and they had fantastic suggestions. All of which were summarily ignored or distorted into 'initiatives' and committees. The collective knowledge of several senior developers blew the Chief Architect out of the water, but their opinions had almost no influence on technical direction.

Former Employee – worked at Sage North America full-time for less than a year
Pros – Nice people depending on the department and the management, good static salary and career. Good for people without any ambition. Don't worry of being good at your job. You can stay all life long if you like to do the robot.
Cons – It is not a place for you if you are looking for an exciting job or for an energetic work environment. Leave your good enthusiasm out of the door before coming into this company. It is not requested.
Advice to Senior Management – Choose leaders rather than careerists as managers or supervisors and you will have great results in terms of innovation.

Current Employee – been working at Sage North America full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Best part of working at Sage is the people. A lot of good people who work well in teams.
Cons – Apathy is setting in fast. No one is held accountable for their actions.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop penny pinching. Pay the decent staff what they are worth. Get rid of the dinosaurs that are dragging you down. Too many managers and directors.

Current Employee – been working at Sage North America full-time for less than a year
Pros – - People in general are pretty nice
- salaries are decent
Cons – - Office location is undesirable (very limited options for lunch or coffee, and public transportation)
- a lot of office politics (you hear whispers constantly)
- company structure doesn't lend to efficiency or collaboration
- not a lot of room for growth (a lot of people have been with the company for a long time, but likely out of complacency, not due to growth opportunities)
- no fun stuff for staff (company events are not well thought out, and lack luster)
Advice to Senior Management – do more fun things for your staff! structure the departments more effectively to promote collaboration between teams!

Former Employee – worked at Sage North America
Pros – Co-workers are generally good. Can have a decent work-life balance for a software company.
Cons – Upper level management is offsite and is disconnected from this campus. There are good people in charge, but not necessarily the right people for this stage of the company's evolution. Moral is generally low. The office location is not convenient to anything.
Advice to Senior Management – Provide some meaningful and achievable direction.

Current Employee – been working at Sage North America full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Generally a good, safe place to work, except for management (prone to re-org lay-offs) and customer support. Senior leadership usually plays it safe and doesn't take a lot of risks, which is good in the current economic climate.
Cons – Not a lot of room for career development, because there isn't a lot of movement, but there are opportunities depending on which department one's in.
Advice to Senior Management – Invest more money in acquiring and retaining top talent

Former Employee – worked at Sage North America full-time for more than a year
Pros – - If you like a stable income without much hassle, this is the job. Think union.
- Flexible with work hours.
- Telecommuting options.
- 9-5 job and good work/life balance. Work is left at work.
- Standard benefits like medical, dental and RRSP contributions
Cons – - Direct line-management has absolutely no clue what is going on technologically.
- Many, if not all Sage products need a rewrite but talent pool is thin and limits the company to do the right thing.
- The culture is very odd. 90% of the team (of 40+ people) I worked for has been there for 10+ years. It is not necessarily a bad thing but the culture feels like a union setting where people tried to do the minimum to get by. There is not enough caring into the work and holding people who wants change held back.
- These developers mentioned are also driven by the outdated technological vision laid out by the architects and line-managers. Meaning you will get frustrated with resistance for change for the better. When there is change, I can feel my hair grow.
- Never got an exit interview to share and express my list of ideas for improving the company. (I voluntarily left and being not let go because of just cause why no exit interview?.) Very disappointed with the HR (hiring and exit) process.
- No-fun culture. The company invest very little into the social events. This causes morale to be low. (One of the last Christmas party was a 300+ people potluck. Foo-bar me! Lame!). I am ashamed to be part of the company when I go through some events like this.
Advice to Senior Management – - The technology stack is outdated. More often than not the increase of technical debt is driven by managers and architects who have not kept up to speed with the latest trend and technology and making incompetent decisions.
- Took on lots of responsibilities and critical-decision making without properly compensated over a decent amount of time (2 years). Would not reward me with a title bump. The main of the major reason I left. My advice is see who your leaders/talents are and reward accordingly. Have your line-managers coach your talent rather than micro-manage them.
- Identify your talents within the company and help them help you hammer proper technological solution out instead of nursing a collapsing and obsolete software designs. Taking something 20 years to build doesn't mean it will take another 20 years to build the next solution. Open up that discussion with the right people. There are chance to retain the right talent before it's too late.
- Give your employees proper exit interviews so you understand what the problem of your company is. Sweeping that information under the rug will not help you get out of this mess.
