I have been working at Saia Motor Freight full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good people, health, vision and dental.

    Cons

Located in the ghetto, aside from my small office it feels like the only thing I know of Saia is the name badge they sent me in the mail. Stock options are broker fees waived only. Training is nonexistent. Upper management has absolutely no clue what I do and my management shrugs it off when “up” slathers on irrelevant tasks or makes uneducated statements. Under staffed and under paid. I may have overheard others jumping ship for less headaches, more pay and structure.
I’m seeing opportunities out there paying 10k more for me as well. I might have a few sick days in a suit coming up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your people! Competitive wages! Less micro managing! Do YOUR job, don’t pass it off and take credit.

    Pros

    Some flexibility with your schedule.
The pay and benefits are ok.

    Cons

The daily administrative work takes at least 50% of your time. Operations and Sales are not aliened, which seems to be the norm at most companies. Communication....not much of any really. You have to inquire and keep inquiring to get your requests processed or even acknowledge, if it does get acknowledged. High level of turn over and I can understand why.

I worked at Saia Motor Freight full-time

    Pros

The benefits package is pretty good.

    Cons

Upper Management is absolutely terrible. They are old school and offer no room for innovation and fresh ideas. Seriously, they are micro managing and rude and have no interpersonal skills whatsoever. In the time that I worked at Saia, they fired about 20 different people in like a year. From what I hear, they are on a roll in firing more people as I write this. Their turnover rate is pretty high, and they are all crazy!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please exit the building. Your terrible!

I have been working at Saia Motor Freight full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I've been with Saia for almost 24 years now and can not think of a better place to get up everyday to come to. We have a great team of Executives and Managers that make sure the employees are taken care of and listen to the employees. I've been here since the company was small and family owned, even after growing into a large corporation, I've never been treated like just a number. I still feel like I work for that family owned company I started with. . I've been able to explore different positions within the company over the years, there is definitely opportunity for growth and career paths. I would not have this many years of service invested in this company if it wasn't a great place to work.

    Cons

I cannot think of one thing that is a con here at Saia. I love this company and could not think of a better place to be employed.

I worked at Saia Motor Freight full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Insurance is free after 10 years, and very reasonably priced prior to that. People do a good job helping each other out. You get out of it what you put in, lots of work but that is typical of the industry.

    Cons

Frequent negativity, depending on where you are way to many personnel changes, very minimal training. Do things their on way because they "have always done it that way".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of the operation metrics are designed around small and medium sized terminals that are not applicable in larger break outfits. Numbers management is there to tell a story/paint a picture of whats going on at a macro level. When you use it to do moment by moment micro management people start trying to manage numbers not the operation. Yet there are lots of folks whom manage to make it work despite of this; but feel they are marginalized.
