I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I've always been a fan of working for smaller companies and Saks is not necessarily the type of store that I would be drawn to but I was treated so well that I returned multiple times. Their HR department and training program are excellent and it's very impressive how much they invest in their employees. I'm not saying any company is perfect, but Saks made me feel valued which really encouraged and motivated me to do my absolute best. Saks also has such a warm work environment. I've never worked at such a large company where almost everyone was so friendly, always smiled and said hello, even when I didn't know them or work in the same department. There are definitely your typical catty, superficial retail types with attitude but it was totally overshadowed by the overwhelming number of truly authentic and down to earth employees that it was honestly a pleasure to come to work every day.

    Cons

There is a lot of "passing the buck" on the management level. When I worked as a sales associate, it was much easier than when I was dealing with the management politics. On that level, it was hard to get much accomplished. No one wanted to take responsibility for making decisions. Also the branding of Saks has really gone down hill, although Marigay McKee seems to be doing a good job bringing the luxury branding back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sales and department managers need to lead by example, support their staff, drop the attitude and treat the sales and support staff with respect.
