Saks Anonymous in Beverly Hills, CA:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

they have a very good discount. Plus it is the creme dela creme of department stores. I really enjoyed working in the beverly hills area it made me feel important

Cons

Everyone needs to get off their high horse. No wonder the store is empty. Everyone has an attitude. It's rare to find someone smiling let alone enjoying themselves that they even have a job

Advice to Senior Management

I think they need to weed out the people that don't want to be their. I know tons of unemployed people with better attitudes that would love a job their

Saks Senior Manager in New York, NY:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Prestige within the retail industry and the opportunity to see some of the leading ideas in fashion in motion; while this is department dependent, some of the senior management is amazing to work for and there is a great opportunity to learn; the Saks university programs are very helpful in both personal and professional development; great corporate discount policies (double discount days and family and friend discount days); particularly in the case of buyers and planners, there lies great potential for internal promotion.

Cons

Obviously, luxury retail is not the best industry to be working in during a recession; there has been a recent history of layoffs in light of declining sales. In terms of department stores, Saks has entered into markets where the potential for future growth is absent. As for corporate environment, some of the senior management is reluctant to change, and it may seem as if suggestions fall upon deaf ears.

Advice to Senior Management

Perhaps give stronger consideration to exiting out of some of the less profitable markets, instead of laying off corporate employees.

Pros

Feeling proud of the company you work for. Learning the business better here than you could at other department stores. Everyone really has a sense of pride about the company, and it shows in the way they interact with others.

Cons

A lot about your job has to do with politics, especially when dealing with senior management and people of power. Also, working with so many women has its downsides. People who work hard and efficiently don't always get rewarded in the way they should.

Advice to Senior Management

Show a little more respect towards your employees, and promote the right people. Promote people who work the hardest and the best. A little "please" and "thank you" goes a long way.
