    Pros

Family-like atmosphere, relational leadership, clear vision of future, addresses areas of opportunity. Though many changes have occurred in recent years, it really seems the leaders are taking time to make strong and positive changes to the organization. If you work here, you will have opportunities to contribute, grow, and develop.

    Cons

It seemed like communication through the organization could have been stronger in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

continue to address root issues and invest in developing employees.

I worked at Salal Credit Union as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I learned so much valuable experience and worked with amazing, kind people. I was given the freedom to utilize my own skills as well as the opportunity to build upon new skills and accept challenging assignments. Salal is a great place to work for and from personal experience, you really get to know your department on a more personal level which just adds to the overall great work environment. I was also very satisfied with the internship pay, they offered way more than I was initially expecting.

    Cons

The only thing I can really think of is that the commute was long for me. However, Salal offers subsidized ORCA card which definitely made my commute easier.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue allowing departments to hire interns! This is a great organization to work for.

I have been working at Salal Credit Union

    Pros

    Committed, hardworking and friendly employees

    Cons

Senior managers are experts at assigning blame to underlings while shifting any responsibility away from themselves. People are constantly scapegoated and fired by management. There is a ridiculously high turnover rate. At the same time the company expresses its commitment to "core values" of treating employees well, which is a joke, since you are completely dispensable if you make the slightest mistake.

This company is going to implode under the stupidity of its management. Besides that, a large bulk of their income is from mortgage refinances. That is declining with rising interest rates, and they will have a high risk of layoffs or being acquired by another credit union.

    Don't work here!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop scapegoating and blaming. Live up to the values you say you believe in.

    Pros

    Great co-workers, starting salary fair

    Cons

Lots of pressure to sell, sell or lose your job. Unless you have a supportive manager, no room to advance even if you have great reviews and meet goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Salal Credit Union full-time

    Pros

free medical and dental insurance; some great people to work with.

    Cons

senior management are firing too many people in the past 12 months. I would say turnover rate is around 35% and you are looking at a company with 100 employees. They hire people and would fire them within 3 months. Avoid this place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop firing people for small mistakes. Train your staff. Focus on what you are doing well, instead of doing bad loan to increase your assets.

An atmosphere of fear and intimidation created by rampant and indiscriminant firing is the norm at this company

I worked at Salal Credit Union full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This company was once a great place to work and had wonderful ideas and a team atmosphere. That has since deteriorated.

    Cons

Salal Credit Union engages in rampant and indiscriminant firing of its' staff. Over 22 people have been let go in the last 5 years, out of a company of a little more the 100 employees. This is a horrible benchmark by any reasonable standard. Managers have absolute tyrannical power. They routinely disregard common sense and ignore the effects of massive firings on the morale of remaining employees, plus the extreme loss of irreplaceable institutional knowledge lost when long-term employees are let go. Mean-spirited, false, and unsubstantiated allegations have been manufactured against certain employees, creating justification for letting them go. People are routinely not replaced when they leave, employees are asked to jump over the moon for much less pay then could be found at a larger company, and overloaded with busy work and tasks outside of an individuals' skill set. If you make any suggestions about better ways to work or ask for any help you are stigmatized as "not wanting to grow with the company." Most people are paid hourly and overtime is absolutely forbidden, so you are set up for failure when trying to cover an increasingly higher workload. Management is under extreme pressure from the board to triple the size of the company in a short amount of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize people for the skills they have and let people focus on what they're good at, don't ask everybody to do everything--no one can be a "jack of all trades." Put the "right people on the right seat on the bus" as was mentioned several years ago. When people start making mistakes, that is an obvious sign that more people need to be hired-NOT a sign of failure on the employee's part. Recognize the horribly destructive effect firings have on employee morale, and the short sighted-ness and foolishness of this practice. Stop the blaming and LISTEN to what your employees say and take action to correct valid, legitimate problems. You need to hire more people if you want Salal to succeed and grow.
