Finance Team Management Extremely Weak Feeding High Turnover

    Finance Manager (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsLeader in space, great experience to take elsewhere, some great hard working people, great location, happening city, lots of opportunity to move elsewhere in company if you do not like what you are doing

ConsTerrible culture, finance team had long exhausting hours, the work was not rewarding, people not rewarded, long timers earning tons but new comers do not feel valued after a short period of time, no mentoring etc. There is a lot of talk about work-life balance but finance did not live up to the "chatter"

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your new employees better, create more mentoring relationships, grow your employees don't just churn them, train your managers especially the old schools ones...

Still a lot of opportunity to learn, connect, and chart your own course, but Big Company culture is encroaching.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsI've spent over 8 years with Salesforce in various management and individual contributor roles, all customer or partner facing. Some of the pros:
    - vibrant, fast paced culture
    - smart, fun, aggressive colleagues
    - management is focused on latest tech trends and staying or becoming a leader for many of them
    - by and large, customers and partners are very positive about the technology
    - good benefits and perqs
    - hip urban culture at HQ
    - a chart-your-own-course mentality that rewards those who aggressively seek out the job they want and pursue it, or sometimes even create it

ConsAfter my long tenure and many Dreamforce conferences, I'm nearly fried. To say the culture is fast paced and the focus is always changing is an understatement. The reason Salesforce always seems on top, and chasing the latest trend, and in the press, is because employees are expected to run harder, carry more, cheer loudly, and pivot constantly. It's the world's biggest startup in behavior. But at the same time, with the recent influx of top career sales leaders from Oracle and what appears to be a board-level mandate for doubling revenue, employees are being asked to do even more with even less, fill higher quotas with smaller territories, less help, and the big company bureaucracy is rearing it's ugly head.

Worse still is the politics. When you hire a bunch of smart, aggressive people, and put them in an environment of outsized expectations, throw in a bunch of re-orgs and changing management, and sprinkle with uncertainty and constantly changing priorities, you inevitably get people back stabbing each other and throwing others under the bus to appear smarter and more worthy of promotion.

The few at the top will get very, very rich. The rest will lose the sense of personal ownership and start to wonder why they've given up health and family

Advice to Senior ManagementThe further you get from the foundational vision of creating great products and ensuring customer success, and instead recruit big company people focused on ego and self-promotion and growing a fiefdom, the more Salesforce starts to become just another Oracle or SAP or Microsoft. My sense is, that's what the board wants. If so, so be it. There will be another innovative and passionate startup to disrupt salesforce some day soon.

Values their employees and is a great place to learn and grow career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat company culture that offers strong support for new employees as well as on-going training. They sponsor numerous employee events and are heavily involved in volunteering and non-profits.

ConsEvery-day, the company moves away from it's small, entrepreneurial spirit and towards the a structure similar to Oracle. It's not too bad, and some things are necessary to continue such enormous growth but it would be nice to see them blaze their own trail instead of completely following Oracle's blue-print

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider more flexibility when it comes to working remotely.

When I was there it was a great place to work with lots of opportunity to learn and advance your career

    Sales Engineer (Former Employee)
    Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsLots of opportunity to learn and advance your career. Lots of perks and generally a young professional company. A Well oiled machine

ConsLots of layers of management consisting of managers that could only ever survive in a large corporate structure. Lots of egos although that is to be expected from a sales organisation.

Advice to Senior ManagementRelinquish some central control. Constant organisational changes leading to too many fiefdoms with new very senior people constantly trying to expand their influence and power bases.

This is an exciting, inspirational place of work

    Senior Account Executive (Current Employee)

ProsThe technology is incredible, the focus of the leadership is strong, the commitment to employees is above average, the dedication to customers is the best I have seen in the industry.

ConsThe quotas are out of alignment with the territories. This makes it difficult to achieve goal. It appears that only 50% of sales reps are making their number.

Advice to Senior ManagementEnsure the quota or goal is logically aligned to the territory.

Public recognition and career advancement occur early and often.

Consgrowing company, growing infrastructure has usual demands.

    Great Product, Terrible Company

    Principal Sales Engineer (Current Employee)

    Pros- Great product/technology/platform
    - Stock Purchase Program
    - Philanthropic Model
    - Benefits
    - Everything you would expect at a big company

Cons- The company culture is toxic. Success through the failure of others
    - TPS reports = badging, v2mom, and work.com
    - No career advancement or mobility

    SE Specific Feedback
    - Comp plan is homogeneous. No way to exceed quota and q4 loaded.
    - SE Management - Just downright not quality people. God help you if you go over anyone's head or question the company line. Might as well give your two weeks notice. Everyone manages up trying to show some value for which they have none
    - Sales Engineering means making Prezi's, videos, and bringing sexy back, not actually being technically competent
    - Training equals going through marketing decks with your peers and a toastmasters score sheet

    Bottom Line
    - The folks being hired now would have never even been looked at 3 years ago.
    - It took the company over six months to fire a guy who had never logged into salesforce and 30 days to fire another guy who had been there for 6 years who voiced his opinion
    - EVERY single person who would be worth keeping is looking to leave
    - Great place to work if you are a sheep who is blind

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are way too many of you. Trim the fat. Heavily.

Awesome Company : One of the dream company to work for !!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsAs you are already aware that the technology is moving to cloud so this is one of the pioneer is cloud computing. The CEO of the company Marc Benioff is a visionary. This is one of the dream company to work for, and you will come to know that right from start of your interview procedure. It is a company where you can learn a lot of stuff about cloud computing. The tools which they use are all latest in the market which makes life more simple. There applications like chatter , salesforce for outlook , connect for outlook are boon to the technology which makes the client's life more simple. This a company where you will get lot of exposure and interaction with quite good number of skilled people. The compensation would be very good and one would have very healthy work life balance and lot of perks, recognition. The company has developed a new technology which is called as force.com which is amazing and have taken our technology to the next level. After you join the company you will get lots of amazing gadgets like iphone , ipad , mac machine etc. You would love it .

ConsOne of the sad part was that our concerns which we use to highlight was never use to reach to our higher managers
Favor-ism was one of the thing which I witnessed because of which other folks used to slog
Job stability is a concern because due to there changes in the higher management they can ask you leave at anytime
Also I felt that few people where not competent enough to be a part of the organization not sure how they got hired.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease try to arrange SKIP level meetings with the employees to understand there concerns, Most of the employees will not complain only because of name " Salesforce.com" and job safety and to get rid of office politics !!
