I worked at Salisbury University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Time to work on homework or relax in between calls/tasks.
-They understand you're a student first. No pressure to come in if you have a test you need to study for or anything else academic related.
-Most of the supervisors are sociable and allow you to get to know them on a personal level.
-Lots of opportunities to work more hours.
    -Laid back environment.

    Cons

-Occasionally there is drama and when it happens every knows about it (office gossip).
-When a supervisor comes in with a funky attitude, it makes for an uncomfortable environment for the student technicians.
-$10 an hour pay cap for student technicians.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If I were the CTS boss I'd get rid of the $10 an hour pay cap for student technicians so that veteran student techs can be paid equivalent to their experience and time with the department. Also some of the supervisors are able to get away with slacking off or causing friction with no consequences. Thats got to stop. It diminishes professionalism. I'd also hire less student techs. At times there were too many students on the payroll and not enough hours to go around.

    Pros

Department overall was great and very organized. Group was friendly and team oriented, family atmosphere. Flexible with work and class schedule.

    Cons

Little to no communication between schools and departments. Pay was awful, even with tuition being covered and no benefits at all.

I have been working at Salisbury University as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Understanding boss, pleasant environment, and the ability to meet an array of people. Clients are understanding and great to work with.

    Cons

As a student worker, the hours are limited, but it's probably for the best; they know you have other classes to worry about.

I have been working at Salisbury University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Job Security, Benefits are pluses. Co-workers are highly-educated and highly-professional. Most employees stay in their positions for lengthy periods of time.

    Cons

Comparatively low pay. Institution is under-funded by the state compared to other USM schools. Little to no training available for non-exempt employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is not much I can say that would make a difference. So much of what transpires at institutions like this is dictated by the state, so the ability for the exec office to affect change is stifled.

I have been working at Salisbury University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Ocean City short drive away. Some students are bright.

    Cons

Toxic work environment. Old professoriate that avoids research (some don't even have PhDs). Discriminatory and prejudiced, watch out if you're not an eastern shore native. Resistant to achievement. Insular, inward looking, parochical, hate change and progress. No standards. Vicious, misogynistic old boys network.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the old guard. Create welcoming and supportive work environment. Backup lip service and commitments with actions, women and faculty of color always complaining. Give higher pay. Reduce workload. Monitor and regulate departments more closely.
