Pros – Sallie Mae offers a great work environment with lots of great people. People are the best part of Sallie Mae as we all try to provide the best service internally and externally to our customers. People come and go to the company and, regarding those that leave, the grass is not always greener elsewhere and some would like to come back. The company is constantly adjusting course to move in the most productive direction for our customers and investors. We promote responsibility to our student borrowers with a 1-2-3 approach: free money, government money, then private money.
Cons – The regulatory risk is the overarching con to this company or industry in general. It is in the news a lot lately. Sallie Mae appears to run a lean IT shop by controlling expenses.
Advice to Senior Management – Continue to keep the employees informed as you are currently doing. It helps knowing that we are all working toward the same goals.

Current Employee – been working at Sallie Mae full-time
Pros – Sallie Mae has seen some very lean times since the government took over federal student loans. It has had to painfully streamline its staff. Benefits are not as good as they once were for those that remain. That has been difficult for everyone. However, it is still a great place to work. People are passionate about doing great work. The work is interesting. We care about making education possible for everyone. In many (not all) departments, management really cares about developing their staff. Sallie Mae is also getting stronger and sounder each month and each year, and will emerge a leaner, stronger company.
Cons – As mentioned, the recent downsizing was terrible for everyone involved. Benefits are not as competitive as they once were.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep focused on developing great people to do great work.

Former Employee – worked at Sallie Mae
Pros – The salary is fair for the position. Most positions have weekends off and the latest shift end time is 9 pm. Also, this location had several conveniences on-site, such as a store and a buffet-style cafeteria.
Cons – As anyone who has ever worked at a call center knows, the call center life can become very redundant as the day to day is the same.
Advice to Senior Management – Spend more time with agents and less time hiding behind the desk. The only complaint that I have about my experience at Sallie Mae is that the supervisors did not spend much time with their agents.

Current Employee – been working at Sallie Mae
Pros – freedom of not having someone micro manage and good training and pay is ok, benefits are decent good mix of people.
Cons – Its like High School sometimes, people gossiping , and the fact that you are monitored like a hawk it can feel a little uneasy.
Advice to Senior Management – pay us more, this is not a 11,12 hour job really its not. They ask a lot out of you with call times and accounts worked its a lot.

Current Employee – been working at Sallie Mae part-time for less than a year
Pros – The bonuses are great in my position, and can be quite lucrative, depending on how you do in a month. Also, for full time, there is unlimited overtime. They also give free food a lot.
Cons – It's a collection job, it is stressful, and they have mandatory overtime for full time about twice a month. The commission is also based off of a goal you have to meet that can be difficult to reach sometimes.
Advice to Senior Management – Less mandatory overtime, it can lower morale and isn't that productive anyway.

Former Employee – worked at Sallie Mae full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I worked for Sallie Mae for almost four years back when headquarters were located in Reston. At the time, the company offered a very flexible work-life balance, with the option to work from home as needed and casual Fridays. Sallie Mae was a well managed, organized, and structured place to work despite the constant grappling that occurred with the federal government over the student loan business. The best part about going into work everyday were the people. Most people I worked with were incredibly genuine, down to earth, and efficient in their roles. It was never a very stressful environment even though the company went through some rollercoaster rides during my time there.
Cons – There is no real performance management that takes place at Sallie Mae and people are given promotions based on popularity. There seemed to be little innovation within the groups I worked for.

Current Employee – been working at Sallie Mae
Pros – SLM provides one ofthe most flexible working environments, allowing folks to work from home very often. Casual fridays are great, and the new headquarters is gorgeous.
Cons – Compensation structure is very rigid, but is pegged to company performance. Upward mobility exists, but % changes in salaries are small. No position between Manager and Director, which makes it tough for those that normally would fall into a Sr. Management position at another company.

Former Employee – worked at Sallie Mae full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Culture and people - generally team oriented and smart. Generally good work-life balance but it is what you make of it. Was lacking in formal job paths, but they are working on it and you can forge your own path if you are so inclined.
Cons – Has been in a fair bit of flux in the last few years and seems to slightly adrift in terms of how it will sustain itself in the future. People and culture are not what it was.
