I worked at Salt Lake Community College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The students for the most part are great. They may not have had all the preparation they need for college, but that is why they are at a Community College. Hard working and motivated. Education is life changing for these students.

    Cons

Faculty are ego driven, not mission driven. Many are compensating for feeling inferior at a two year, versus a four year ,institution and like to conduct themselves as if they are at a four year research institution, caring more about research and publication than teaching, even though this is a teaching college. Resistant to change and new technology. Tenure promotes those who play the politic game, not the good teachers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of tenure. Evaluate all faculty on the basis of their service to students. Get a mission/vision and have everything relate back to that mission/vision. Embrace technology mediated learning and innovations such as open entry competency based education.

I worked at Salt Lake Community College full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, work-life balance, lots of parking, great faculty and students

    Cons

The college recently sent an email to employees asking them to help SLCC receive an award for being one of the top five places to work in Utah. Employees were asked to complete an online "anonymous" survey, but most people I've talked to are suspicious that management is monitoring their responses. Most people I've talked to didn't dare say anything negative about the college. This seems like cheating to me and contributes to an atmosphere of fear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let employees be honest about their feelings and needs without fear of reprisal.

    Pros

    Free Education, and great benefits.

    Cons

Depending on the department you work for, you may or may not receive a lot of support, or treated like a person. I worked for the janitorial department, and they treat all of their employees like they are slaves, and have no mind of their own.
    Ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to talk to (your) people ( you are not better then they are!!), place the right people in the right areas, if you see hard working employees utilizes their skills and strengths to build a solid team. Trust your employees and don't act they are all a bunch of thieves and drug addicts.

    Pros

I was an unpaid intern, but the quantity of skills that I gained was worth it. We were encouraged to ask questions and work at our own pace. The hours were also extremely flexible. I value the time I spent there.

    Cons

Unpaid, but like I said, totally worth it.

I worked at Salt Lake Community College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The students and developing programs and services to meet their needs.

    Cons

Environment needs improvement. Applicant Interview process is slow, ineffective, includes too many people that are inappropriate to the decision making in the hiring process. The committee model is lackluster, uncreative, and takes the power away from the person and persons that will be directly working with the candidate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop sugarcoating and be honest. Stop being afraid to tell the truth about your feelings and still be constructive. Get creative.
