Pros
Like many jobs, it is a secure place to work that will hire a wide variety of people (but not just anybody). For college students like me, it's an appropriate summer job. A little more sophisticated than flipping burgers at McDonalds, but a little easier to apply, and get hired for, than Goodwill or Walmart.
Cons
First and foremost, it's dirty. To be fair, this is half expected from a store that sells stuff that has been sitting in people's closet and attics for years. Also, when I say dirty, I don't mean like greasy warehouse/factory dirty or shoveling sand and rocks dirty. In this case, I mean tumble-weed dust-bunnies dirty. Also, the store is pretty big. So, if you get my job, your legs will be tired and aching at the end of the day.
Advice to Senior Management
Just remember, on your first day in our neighborhood, you put at least ten young adults and college students on the unemployment line. Including me!
Pros
You are doing a fabulous work for your community and helping people who really need it.
They provide good health benefits.
There is a spiritual aspect to the work that helps.
Cons
I was very underpaid.
When laid off you cannot get unemployment
They did not help employees deal with the intense stress of the job
Poor communication and lack of respect for employees
Seeming little connection to the employees needs
Advice to Senior Management
Provide more training to staff. Give people support in crisis instead of firing them. Understand the needs of staff for encouragement. Pay people what they are worth. Help employees find work before and after layoffs. Give people warning prior to layoffs. Value employee ideas and opinions. Find time for employee team building. Provide training opportunities to employees.
Pros
They work for a good cause. If you believe in their cause, they are sincere. They help people.
Cons
If one is not religiously inclined, you may feel uncomfortable here, although the organization does not push that. The people are sincere.
Advice to Senior Management
Respect the administrative peoples who do work for you. There are the ones actually carrying out the work.
Pros
There weren't very many positives to working for the salvation army. I guess the only positive for working for them was they help alot of people in unfortunate financial situations.
Cons
The Salvation Army berates all of their employees and talks down to them. They do not properly train any employees either.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to actually care about your employees. The lack of sensitivity creates a very hostile place of work. Every one should be treated fairly and management should not be talking about their issues with an employee to another employment.
Pros
The compensation is relative high compared to other non for profit organizations. It has sufficient funding to run real projects.
Cons
Work pace is low and not encouraging. Some bureaucracy within the organization. Not very innovative. Too many image building activities.
Advice to Senior Management
I suggest the leaders think more carefully about the allocation and spending of money, as well as the ultimate mission of the organization.
Pros
It is a great experience to work with such a committed and ethically sound organization. It has been a very positive experience.
Cons
I personally do not see any downsides toi workinfg with the Salavtion Army, I just wish there were more available positions within the company.
Advice to Senior Management
I personally do not have the sufficient time woking with the company to offer this type of advice or opinion.
Pros
Good to get any experience
Cons
Helping people out is always good.
Advice to Senior Management
Not be so hard on yourself.
Pros
fair benefit compair with another non-profit
Cons
too much work and very limited opporturnity to promote
Advice to Senior Management
good
Pros
customers are the only pleasant part of a thank less job and rude abrasive management policies animals are treated with more respect
Cons
management and policies and treatment of hard working employees should be examinded as well as store sites and violations and safety
Advice to Senior Management
get a clue if you only knew what the chain of command does you would rethink your choices and employees
Pros
You help others when another organization gives you the money. That is sad in itself ,too. It is nice to relieve someone elses pain
Cons
You are nothing. Money is not used properly. They pay everything for the Commanding Officers but pay poverty level income when it comes to other employees. There is no chance to go anywhere.
Donations are used on to pay for the buildings they use, rent or mortgage, electric bills, etc.
The clients bills are paid through money given to the organization from other organizations. Seems to me that would leave money to pay the employees better
Advice to Senior Management
Care about your employees! Charity should start with your employees.
Christian practices should not be left at home! Be kind and don't take stress out on those in your office.Do not pick and choose times you care to be professional but always be that way.
