    Pros

I have been through several CEO's at Sam's Club and other retailers throughout my 28 years career in retail. Rosalind(Roz) Brewer is professional, intelligent, sets clear expectations, forward thinker, caring, holds people accountable in a constructive manner, great listener, personable, easily approachable, and honest. Unlike other leaders I have encountered, she is very transparent.

    Cons

My 5 star rating of Sam's Club above is mainly due to Roz's leadership. Some of the leader under Roz are not transparent specifically at the SVP/VP level. Some are doing terrible things to their associates, and getting away with it due to them hiding under the "holding associates accountable", and they have influence over their EVP.

The people division at Sam's Club must build more credibility internally. They need to be truly trained on what their job is. Some of the people managers have complete loyalty to an SVP. So if this SVP wants to fire anyone, he could find ways to do it without looking like he is retaliating. This happened repeatedly to good talented people that ended up leaving the company.

    Advice to Management

There are many great leaders at Sam's, but there needs to be more direct involvement from Walmart, Inc. CEO and Roz so they can discover the few leaders that don't exemplify what true leadership skills are all about. For example: If there were repeated complaints/open doors by previous or current associates on a leader, then something is wrong with that leader, and needs to be moved to another position.

At the time I had hip problems. I had a hip replacement and all is good.

    Pros

Flexible with school schedule, store closes at 8-9pm depending on season so its great for high school and college students. Starting pay decent.

    Cons

Constantly having to push "upgraded" memberships down customers throat. Minimal training. Inconsistent leadership, if you are not liked you will be on your way out. Pay does not increase much after first year or two.

    Advice to Management

Train your people and be consistent. The high turnover rates are a morale buster and hourly associates are frustrated. Invest in your associates from the beginning and they will be more productive and loyal.

    Pros

Reasonably fair. Get along with most people. Like the title says, I've had worse jobs.

    Cons

The constant understaffing, especially in light of annual events in town that should not be taking anyone by surprise. Always big sales days, always poorly planned for. And the communication... nonexistent. I know my job, but if there's something that specifically needs to be done, COMMUNICATE THAT! I'm damn good, but I'm not a mind-reader.

    Advice to Management

Get us some damn help! Cross-coded in three departments, and help REGULARLY in four others besides my primary. I don't mind helping out, but when I'm the only one covering three departments, TWO of which are supposed to be staffed at all times, we're going to run into problems.

    Pros

Great opportunities to move throughout the company, people are hard workers and have to be.

    Cons

Difficult to advance as the system is designed to root out potential liabilities from advancing. Depending on the Club, it may require who you know vs. what you know and accomplished. Many people give up because they get passed up by social promotions.

    Advice to Management

Move General Managers Around to different clubs within the Market. That way you can see what Manages are true Manager and who are riding in the fame that subordinates produce. A strong Manager will walk n to a Club and add value and improvement to a Club.

Have more opportunities for Team Leaders to have MIT training.
