I have been working at SamTrans for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people are fun to work with. Great place for older adults to retire from. Work-Life balance it perfect. You go home went its time to leave.

    Cons

Most of management has been here too long. There were great perks in the past. Everything has been stripped down to bare bones.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask staff to evaluate their supervisor's performance.

I understand taking a job here if you are currently unemployed.

    I worked at SamTrans full-time

    Pros

CalPERS. Good health benefits. Normal business hours for the most part. PTO can build up quickly and continues to accumulate year after year. Getting time off is a breeze. You are very unlikely to ever go home stressed from the actual work. Know, or click with the right folks, and you could be set for life.

    Cons

Lowest paying of the transit agencies in the Bay Area. If questionable management behavior gets on your nerves, prepare to be stressed. Most managers never leave since CalPERS works well for them and they are highly unlikely to find an equivalent position outside of SamTrans. This means that unless your manager dies or retires, upward mobility for most is non-existent. HR claims there is a zero tolerance policy for retaliation from managers if you file a complaint, but be prepared to understand that what you may view as retaliation may very well fall under the heading of "management rights" as far as HR is concerned. Not a good fit for independent thinkers. Unquestioning obedience is highly prized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How about another re-org at the chief level? The last one didn't work out so well for a lot of the staff. The company's reputation has taken a beating since then (just google 'samtrans' and 'nbc' together). And, like someone else suggested, how about letting the employees rate their managers? That yearly "performance evaluation" should work both ways, not just as a one sided beat down. Nothing kills ones' work ethic like low morale.

I have been working at SamTrans

    Pros

Family environment. Meaning that people here treat each other like family

    Cons

Not all of management know what they are doing. They can not lead by example because they do not know what their employees do.
