I worked at Samsung Research America full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

According to my experience and conversation with people from other teams, people in R&D are supportive and family-oriented. Samsung R&D hires experienced and talented engineers, designer and researchers. It is a good environment to learn whole process of the product from the ideation stage to the launch. Also it is the best place to catch up with most advanced technology. Benefits are little worse than other Silicone Valley companies, but HR keeps trying to improve benefits and working environment.

    Cons

Working with HQ is really hard. Many times, they informed us very short notices about important changes in projects. The reason why they built R&D in California is to get a better sense of US market from US employees. But HQ ignores valid researches and inputs from us. Since it is a huge global corporate, projects are sometimes overlapped with R&D in other countries.

    Advice to Management

Dispatchers from HQ(Korea) should be more actively working as a bridge between R&D in US and HQ. Sometimes, dispatchers' lack of English skills make it difficult for us to communicate with HQ.

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time

    Pros

Get to work on some great projects. Some teams are working on things which will only hit the market years from now. The new campus is nice.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be an issue in some teams. Difficulty in communicating with different teams across the company. Difficult to move within the company. Partly because of very little knowledge of what other teams are doing.

    Advice to Management

Till now the Senior management has done a great job to try and build good culture within the company, at par with other bay area companies. But still there is a more to be done. But one can the see the genuine effort being made.

I worked at Samsung Research America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

growing and strong work life balance growing startup mentality is catching but still needs work finally signs of breaking away from HQ threads as critical mass of local company is attained

    Cons

    1. very silo oriented thinking and lack of collaboration incentives means similar ideas get built in different ways in silos are shoe-horned into a narrow existing product focus. 2. need more employee empowerment 3. needs stronger executives with silicon valley mentality and courage

    Advice to Management

Increase employee empowerment on decision making and better incubate collaboration opportunities across Samsung divisional silos to enable reduced R&D expense and avoid duplicated technology development and create a more enabled service opportunities rather than an enabler built for only 1 divisional use case. Need more outside the box business wizards to complement the advanced technology pump.
