Stay Away if You have a Choice

Manager (Current Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsGreat employee benefits (health care, 401K)
    Nice employer subsidized cafeteria
Stable company with great financial performance

ConsPoor management with unrealistic workload. Many of the senior management team, including the President, are dispatched from Korea, with a very traditional belive of good workers should work long hours
Poor advancement policy (min. 2 years between promotions), less incentive to perform the best within the first year of promotion
    Very Korean-centric cultural
Samsung punishes loyal employees by paying more and giviing better titles to new hires with less experience or lower qualifications

Advice to Senior ManagementReview exisiting promotion policy, implment work-life balance, not just talking about it!!!!

This company treats anyone who is non-korean as a visitor who will be there for a while and then leave soon.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Jose, CA

    ProsBenefits and bonouses are good.

ConsVery Korean based and Koreans there have no idea how to treat people even if they think they do.

Advice to Senior ManagementHR has no control over Korean employees and they just follow what they want/demand.

    Samsung Equipment Eng

Engineer II (Current Employee) Austin, TX

ProsSamsung Austin Semiconductor has a great group of hard working people who make going to work everyday worth while. Good to see a company that can outsource jobs to the USA.

ConsIf you are afraid of hard work or having to put in lots OT at times you may want to find another company to work for.

Advice to Senior ManagementInternal software leaves much to be desired, there is a alot of wasted time due to some of the half-bake systems that are pushed out.

overtime pay for below manager level

    Conslimited upward mobility
communication if often limited between the dispatchers from Korea and local employees because of the language barrier

Advice to Senior Managementneed to give more opportunities to the local employees.

You can't beat living and working in Austin. It'd just be nice to be working for someone else.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Austin, TX

    ProsWorking in Austin is great.
Benefits seemed great at the beginning, before I realized what was up.

ConsThere is definitely a clash of cultures in the workplace. The Korean work ethic (though I admire it at times) is incompatible with Americans. I was working upwards of 70 hour weeks and was still reprimanded by my superiors for lack of effort. My last performance assessment was FAR below what it rightfully should have been. The rating system they use is incredibly biased and needs to be re-calibrated.

Don't be drawn in by the benefits--they are amazing, but not enough to keep you happy for long.

Human Resources Specialist I (Former Employee) Austin, TX

ProsYou would be hard pressed to find a company that offers a benefits package. WHEN S.T.A.R bonus is achieved, it is a nice addition to your salary. There is something about saying that you work or have worked at SAS that makes you feel proud and important.

ConsThe Korean work ethic and the American work ethic couldn't be more different. The sheer number of Korean ex-pats causes unrealistic expectations across the board. Poor communication between employees and management. Reviews, promotions, and disciplinary action can all be questionable depending on the person involved. You are lead to believe that family is as important to them as it is to you, but choices between your family and your job are all too often expected of you.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees and don't perpetuate the disconnect between them and yourselves.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
