I worked at Samuel Shapiro & Company as an intern

    Pros

Great company, everyone loves what they do and everyone gets along and the workplace is pretty casual. It is a great place to learn about international logistics since the work can get technical with paperwork and terms.

    Cons

Since the company is really small, there is not much chance to move around, especially if you want a career in the international arena you work with all these great global companies but not much exposure other than that.

I worked at Samuel Shapiro & Company as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great internship program in regards to learning the international trade industry. Deal face to face with other companies over the phone and through email. Meeting daily deadlines was imperative. Through the internship program, organizational skills, phone communication skills, and overall understanding of the industry increased greatly. Import analysts in office answered all questions and assisted with any issues. Great comrodery overall and good group of young professionals.

    Cons

Daily work is extremely repetitive and limitations as to what you can do as an import intern.

I have been working at Samuel Shapiro & Company full-time

    Pros

Small company, lots of visibility with upper management. Casual company culture. Flexible hours. Not super corporate, little brown-nosing required. General family feel. Will learn a lot in and have lots of control over your success.

    Cons

Limited potential for growth since company is so small. Lateral growth seems to often be blocked by current managers. Compensation is underwhelming. Inconsistent treatment of employees across departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You will continue to lose talent until you start compensating more fairly and creating incentives. Also a good worker does not equal a good leader.

    Pros

The biggest pro I can think of working for this company is the people. Everyone works as a team and gets along really well. Great culture.

    Cons

There is not much training put in place and opportunities for advancement is limited. The location is not the best as it is in downtown Baltimore.

I worked at Samuel Shapiro & Company

    Pros

It is a paying internship that is flexible to allow you to go to school and make decent money at the same time.

    Cons

The role is tedious as you are continuously browsing shipping sites for the same shipments that you already tracked in the days previous. The company is disorganized and taught me almost nothing because every other day there was a change of plans.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get management to sit still and understand that interns are there to learn and work not just browse the Internet. If you are not interested in teaching intens just pay the money to subscribe to the shipping websites.
