Pros
San Diego Gas & Electric is the only California electric utility that did not become insolvent during the 2000-2001 energy crisis. That says a lot about the professionals it employs in its regulatory, finance, and accounting departments. Although SDG&E is much smaller than the other California IOUs (PG&E and SCE), what it lacks in size it gains in efficient management and focused decision-making.
Cons
The industry as a whole has very little turnover and as a result some employees get complacent and fail to keep up with the times. In other more competitive enterprises these people would have been laid-off or terminated long ago. That said, there are plenty of opportunities for those who are young, ambitious, and aspire to do great things.
Advice to Senior Management
I have no advice to give to management.
Pros
Stable company with nice staff and a place to make friends. I think senior management cares about the community too.
Cons
Lack of promotions - in IT, some people are hired from outside and then hire their friends or family - then promoted to director ( without skills) and continue to hire friends and promote them. Some business units vp's fast track relatives. Some good ol boy attitudes prevail.
Average salaries with a strong portion based on performance.
All this leaves a rational and qualified person on the outside and not valued for promotions and causes years of cleanup to get the situation stabilized.
Advice to Senior Management
Reduce the amount of performance based icp pay and raise base salaries.
Change and enforce policies about management who hire and promote friends and relatives. Send a clear message to those who do - remove them from decision making.
Pros
This is a great company to work for, specially for those who want a stable job and are not use to handle ups and downs of life. Their pension and bonus plan is great. This can be a company where you may want to stay long and finally retire. I remember at every all hands there will be several awards for the people completing 20,25,30 years of service.
Cons
Don't expect huge growth financially or professionally, It is a slow moving company and takes time to get the work done. There is some internal politics. You need to have internal connection to move up the ladder.
Advice to Senior Management
Need to value its employees and their contributions, specially those who have been rated exceptional on their annual performance reviews but not found suitable for career advancements.
Pros
It's a very stable company to work for.
Cons
Career advancement is limited within the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
To give an equal chance to everyone to advance.
Pros
Good work life balance and many good people to work with .
Cons
Disorganized business processes and it takes forever to get anything done. No career development.
Advice to Senior Management
Most of the departments within the SDG&E work in a silo; there is very little enterprise view of the organization. Most career development is within the silo. Streamline the business process and the systems which support the processes. In conjunction, drop the safety program as it is really annoying to the majority of the employees. Also, update the employee feedback survey as it really does not help nor promote affective change.
