I have been working at San Francisco Health Plan full-time

    Pros

The mission, healthy work-life balance, great PTO for all levels of employees, supportive managers and

    Cons

I wouldn't call them cons but challenges. The organization is facing rapid growth and it needs to further solidify its strategy to grow and career course high performers internally to increase retention and motivate the workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Hire people who are smarter than you. Otherwise, the organization will experience decreasing (and diminishing) abilities and talents as you move down the reporting chain.
    2) Support every individual to the best of your abilities. Remove managers who don't have the soft skills to build successful teams.
    3) Regularly remind the staff why SFHP exists and the impactful work that the organization is doing through videos, email blasts, newsletter, events, etc.

Unhealthy place to work, good cause to work for. What a shame

I worked at San Francisco Health Plan full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good mission: To provide healthcare for the healthcare safety net

    Cons

Management disorganized. Too many managers (ie. people with a job tile that includes manager such as project managers) whose purpose is mainly to promote themselves. Not enough people who actually do the work. . Management is by intimidation. If you value a healthy work environment, this is not it. Very dysfunctional organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off your power trip and manage the organization. Good management includes, getting the right people, managing priorities, and managing how the work gets done.

I have been working at San Francisco Health Plan full-time

    Pros

    -company is growing rapidly
-work culture is positive; lots of humor; non-profit altruistic work culture
-great dinosaur of a pension plan and good benefits
    -near BART
-mission focused with employees who believe the work they do matters for the population we serve
    -fast pace/ dynamic work environment
    -company has strong financial health
    -Women of Color in management/c-suites
-HEDIS Gold award winning for six years in a row (2007-2013)
-dominate San Francisco Medi-Cal market as the local initiative plan; serving 17% of SF population with its various programs and reached 100,000 members in April 2014

    Cons

-employee retention is a company goal because salary is not competitive, difficult for early career professionals to obtain promotions/leadership roles, veteran employees deal with organizational barriers that systematically prevent job satisfaction (e.g. lack of autonomy for decisions, home grown systems that solve immediate problems but not sustainable, constant “put out fires” approach vs. prevention)
-rapid company growth has required management to invest in how the company is structured to improve business processes; the institutional change they are fostering takes time to implement and the rapid industry changes coupled with the internal changes makes this growth period a challenging work environment

I worked at San Francisco Health Plan

    Pros

Great mission doing great work to help provide safety net healthcare. Very proud of that.

    Cons

IT became a body shop; should just offshore because the staff/contractors hired knew nothing about healthcare, or certainly not american healthcare. Hurts analysis efforts and caused loss of credibiliy on the business side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your staff. The everyone is replaceable mentality is arrogant and only damages in the end. Management by fear is not the way to do it.

    Pros

SFHP's mission is awesome. The employees with tenure are truly dedicated to improving healthcare for the residents of San Francisco.

    Cons

Pay is not comparable to market. Management is under qualified and changes direction too often which creates dissonance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at San Francisco Health Plan

    Pros

    Community-based
    Non-profit
    Great mission
Still a small enough organization that allows for quick decision-making
Very diverse group of employees that understand the organizations main customers

    Cons

Relatively young organization that is going through some growing pains
Government-sponsored programs with heavy restrictions and short deadlines make prioritizing difficult

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Place value in those who are formal and informal leaders, listen and act upon feedback from staff and define the vision for the organization
