Great place to learn and grow.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat faculty and amazing new Library with plenty of entertainment options and student growth opportunities.

ConsSome of the buildings were built 5 years ago and are in dire need of repair/ remodeling. The University does not receive the respect it deserves due to lack of funding and under performing students.

Advice to Senior ManagementIn vest more in sustainable rehabilitation in your building facilities. As a Silicon Valley institution, it needs to be state of the art and more high tech.

Great union / benefits for part-time faculty

    Lecturer (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsWe all know that part-time / temp college faculty are gross underpaid, but as these gigs go, SJSU's strong temp-faculty union provides the best benefits access I've seen for such positions.

ConsNothing more than the usual for such part-time / temp college faculty positions: The pay stinks. Actually teaching five classes -- the theoretical full-time assignment -- would be an impossibly superhuman load. But have no fear; they'll never give you a full load even if you want it.

Advice to Senior ManagementIT systems are not up to par with similar institutions. Get after it.

Overall a good experience. The bureaucracy is hard to deal with at some times

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat working with the students. Most of the staff and faculty continue to work here because they truly care about with students.

ConsThe bureaucracy is overwhelming at times and the faculty tends to fight change--"that's not the way we've always done it". This causes friction between the faculty that have been at the school for a while (sometimes decades) and the new administration which was brought in to make changes and right the "fiscal ship". Many on the faculty feel that the administration is only looking out for their own future and not necessarily what's best for the university.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave more interaction with the staff and faculty and listen to their inputs, remember why you were brought in--to make changes and fix the issues that have been rolled from previous administrations. Biggest thing to remember is that neither side can get everything they want so it takes teamwork. Also work on public speaking and PR so that you can get your vision across better.

    Mixed bag.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsLots of great dedicated people who believe in the mission.

ConsToo much politics. Salaries though public are rarely equitable and many have received no cost of living increases or standard raises since 2007.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdopt standardized methods similar to the City of San Jose and Santa Clara County for hiring and for employee pay. Implement a better "management" training program.

    Good environment overall

    Associate Professor (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsThere's a lot of moral support, some opportunities, and flexible time. If you work moderately hard, you'll make tenure. The benefits are good.

ConsThere's administrative bloat, controversies, and instability. People know SJSU from the bad news in the newspaper.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrim yourselves down. Learn how to handle difficult situations better.
