    Pros

SMC is forward thinking in a lot aspects. As an organization they do many things right. They, promote (and in many places embody) responsive government; focus on serving the public in effective and efficient ways; strive to create a prosperous, safe, collaborative, healthy, safe and livable community; encourage Work-Life (blend/balance); and champion employee engagement, development, wellness and performance.

    Cons

While the County may promote and believe in all of the above, many Departments are left to their own devices, and may not adopt all or many of the above. In addition, there are also challenges working in an environment where employees may be geographically and organizationally / departmentally disparate.

I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent health insurance options. Good people. It's very easy to advance here if your willing to play the game.

    Cons

There are too many project and HR managers and an awful lot of people employed to delegate and "engage" people who delegate. Dozens of committees (which have sub committees and steering committees) who talk about "affecting positive change" and "change management" and "employee engagement"- Most of the people with the hard skills- (the tool makers) are "agile" (temporary) or consultants. Honestly, the extent of the tech knowledge of 80% of the technical staff (and 99% of technical upper management) is seriously limited- as in they call in a consultant to fix whatever's broken and to explain what the next big thing is. There is a great deal of law bending. Some supervisory staff are very immature and retaliatory- to an embarrassing extreme. You don't get paid for your opinions though so keep quiet, do your job, and enjoy the hilarity. It can be very entertaining.

    Advice to Management

When your project doesn't work, even if you've spent weeks and months convincing everybody that it will- have the courage to end it. This will gain you genuine respect which is quite different and much better than the pretend version. Also- Don't surround yourself only with yes people, seek out people who are honest, intelligent, and objective because even the very best leaders can benefit from a second pair of eyes.

I have been working at San Mateo County full-time

    Pros

    Great benefits and decent pay

    Cons

Management is horrible. They promote staff according to favouritism. A regular employee can be more educated than a manager but don't move up because of politics.

I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The County offers a healthy benefits package, flexible work schedules, and encourages and supports a hefty amount of professional development opportunities.

    Cons

There is a clear delineation between line staff and management. Line staff feel that the organization is management-heavy; and management tends to meet and operate in somewhat of a silo, which leads to distrust among line staff.

    Advice to Management

Keep encouraging professional development, but make management and their meetings (i.e. meeting minutes, etc.) more transparent. This will lead to staff feeling more supported and equal.

  10. Great benefits and salary

    Pros

The salaries are enough to prove a decent living in the Peninsula. Benefits and employee perks such as transportation subsidy are great and help a lot.

    Cons

Limited opprtunites to move up in the organization. Old timers bring the morale and quality of work down and prevent innovative thinking.

    Advice to Management

Create a true management fellowship program that will help younger employees enter management tracks.

  11. Overall ok, not great. Lot's of politics and top down approach instead of listening to front line staff.

    Advice to Management

listen to your staff -not only your other managers!
