I worked at San Mateo County

    Pros

Good pay, stable hours, centralized management and organization. Downtown Redwood City can be hit or miss. Easy freeway access to either 280 or 101.

    Cons

Cost of living is insane, resulting in a commute - which adds time and aggravation to the mix. Some old school employees sit in positions and limit upward mobility.

Overall ok, not great. Lot's of politics and top down approach instead of listening to front line staff.

I have been working at San Mateo County

    Pros

The salaries are enough to prove a decent living in the Peninsula. Benefits and employee perks such as transportation subsidy are great and help a lot.

    Cons

Limited opprtunites to move up in the organization. Old timers bring the morale and quality of work down and prevent innovative thinking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a true management fellowship program that will help younger employees enter management tracks.

I worked at San Mateo County full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    pension

    dedicated staff

management is flexible about giving time off

    Cons

Group Supervisor III's at Camp Glenwood work 10 hour shifts and provide breaks to other line staff but they don't receive a daily break. isn't this illegal?

over time is frowned upon and flexing is encouraged by most management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management is aware of the break issue and decides to not address it because nobody complains.... nobody complains in fear that they will be transferred or it may stunt their ability to move up within the county. just because nobody complains doesn't make it right.

"needs of the institution" is overplayed...

I worked at San Mateo County full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent pay, benefits and training opportunities. Cutting edge training opportunities. Culture of diversity. Wonderful clients and support staff. Schedule flexibility.

    Cons

Some people work very hard, whereas others barely work - and management seems to have difficulty discerning which is which. Kind of the stereotype about working in a county job. Workload was overwhelming in some positions, and lacking in other positions. Management seems to always be in meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many meetings and not enough ability to speak about your actual work.

Phenomenal place to work, great employees, horrible union. You must like the outdoors and be in good physical shape.

    Pros

Working outside in nature, the pay is good, retirement is good, benefits are good. Leadership at my level is good. They are smart people with good common sense.

    Cons

cleaning bathrooms can be nasty, work is physically demanding. Lots of public interaction and opinions vary so it's not always good interactions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

spend more time in the field.

    Pros

very little pressure; great place to work if you don't require supervision; plenty of different tasks to work on so you never get bored

I worked at San Mateo County full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits. Some departments offer flex schedules. Job security and supervisors (not managers) were usually very empathetic and helpful and coworkers were great.

    Cons

You only get a minimal raise every year and after the 5th one, you can't get any more. Upper management has little to no interest in feedback from line staff and morale is close to nonexistent. Sick time usage is frowned upon, even if excused. Hard to be promoted as most of it is political and based on how well you get along with management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about your employees! Listen to their comments and feedack and pay attention to how low the morale is in your departments. Have some sort of team bonding or incentive and decrease the amount of favoritism in the office.

I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The County Manager's office is really striving to make the County a better place to work. The benefits are good, and the retirement is great. Training is available and highly encouraged.

    Cons

The office I work in is in a para-military style organization. There is a lot of focus on discipline and towing the line, hence people are afraid to do anything creative or outside of the box. Enthusiasm is dampened by the fear of doing something wrong or being perceived as non-compliant. There is a general attitude of "that's the way we've always done it here."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The values and mission are there -- but management doesn't act congruently. Compassion is one of our stated values, yet Senior Managers do not practice or demonstrate compassion. Integrity is another value, but not all Senior Managers embody this value, and there are a few who lack any integrity. Bullying in all forms should be discouraged and stopped immediately.
